I am new to 4 x 4 and when I select the 4 wheel drive the vehicle starts to struggle as if the brakes are being pressed. If I turn the steering slightly then it gets worse, I do suspect the front hubs are faulty is this a qucik fix. I am an engineer and have worked on all my vehicles and rebuilt many from teh ground up replacing chassis etc but I am totally new to 4 x 4 and would like some advice please. I think maybe as I have only just got the vehicle Terrano11 that it has not been used in 4 wheel drive and maybe a quick strip, clean and rebuild of the hubs will sort it.?

Someone far more knowledgeable than me will be along shortly, but are you using 4WD on Tarmac, or an ordinary road surface?

4WD is only for the slippery stuff I.e. snow, mud or gravel etc. you could be getting diff wind up.

Alan

As said above it sounds like wind up that you are suffering. Checkout the Quick Links and look for Downloads, there are instructions on the use of 4WD and also a good workshop showing how to strip down and clean the front "Auto Locking Free Wheeling Hubs". There are stacks and stacks of posts about them too. If there is a problem it'll be what is described as the "Brake Ring's" that have stuck together and broken, an easy fix but dealer part only. As you say lack of use is usaully the culprit. I got sick of mine playing up so changed them to manuals but these are not everyones cup of tea but they suit me and that is what's important to me. Might be worth getting the old grease gun out on your drive shafts too just to be on the safe side.

I'm sure you'll find a link to the workshop manual somewhere on here too so that you can see the transmission components.

Thanks you for your help, I will do some digging around the site . Thanks again.

I just run it 100 - 200 yds then back up to dis engage and to be honest it feels better every time just making sure I was not doing any more damage. It runs straight well just when you try to turn a corner it virtually stops the vehicle

Just trying it on the road at the moment

Do not use 4wd on the road, Only on surfaces where the wheels are able to slip.

The center has no diff, so the front and back wheels spin at the same speed.

Also turning is always hard in 4wd especially when tight turns or on hard grippy road.

Thank you all very much just making sure, I only have had sports cars previously (in fact I still have 23 of them) I bought this so I could get around in the winter last winter I could not move out the drive as all the electroics would not let my car move anywhere.
