My old Terrano was a 2000 and the ECU was also under a false floor in the passengers foot well.

I now have a 2005 Terrano which has an additional small metal box in the centre console behind the hand break but it looks very small in comparison to the ECU I had in my 2000 Terrano and I'm wondering if this is really the ECU.

no that is the air bag module, Rick

Right I think I have located it, took the center console apart including the lower tray which u put your glasses etc in and it appears to be above that at an angle. It has a lot of wires going in to it so I'm assuming it's the ECU rather than anything to do with airbags or alarm.

Haven't got that far yet and didn't really look. I shall have a butchers tomorrow. It appears to be connected via bolts and is silver in colour (sorry pretty crap description)

On both of the T2's i've had (1999 & 2005) it was behind the centre console as I came across them when running extra wiring to the cubby hole in front of the gear sticks. Regarding changing the stereo & the NATS system i've never once had an issue after changing the stereo, fitted 2 different stereos in the 99 T2 & have replaced the stereo twice in my current 05 T2. The stereo code isn't stored on the stereo but on the ECU which I think is the NATS one but not totally sure but every time i've had to refit the factory stereo due to my after market one dieing it worked straight away when I switched it on
