I didn't fancy replacing the outer cv boots myself and time was tight so I let a local garage do them for me as I needed it sorting out quick.
They took a day extra to do the job which ok I could cope with. All has been well for the last couple of weeks until today coming home from work. I started to hear a odd noise that I couldn't put my finger on. It got worse but as I was close to home I limped home but it really sounded bad and I'm sure I could feel whatever the noise was.
I picked my son up from work in my skoda and asked if he could jack it up and take a look whilst I was out at cadets. Just as I was setting off he called me over and asked if the wheel was supposed to wobble like that on the hub.
Jeez it doesn't half move, looks like the wheel bearing is either none existent or what I suspect is the two screws from the bearing adjustment plate are missing. My theory is the bearing had been tightened up and the screws missed off. Over the last couple of weeks the plate gradually slackened off until today it was so loose it got worse and worse.
I've been driving at motorway speeds in this:eek:
Problem is in my opinion it is too dangerous to drive. I'm going to phone the garage and inform them so they are made aware. Saturday morning I'll take the wheel off and the fixed hub and take a look at what's going on. I'm hoping the screws are still there and I can simply adjust back up and refit the screws and all will be well.
Really annoyed about all this and the garage have done a really bad job. I'm hoping that this hasn't caused any damage but would appreciate your opinions about damage to look for. Please don't give your opinions about the garage as that goes without saying and unless there is some damage then i will not be taking the car back to that place.

Seems like it's the season of dodgy repairs at the moment :doh

Good luck with it Jim :thumb2

If the bearing has spun on the stub axle it has likely worn it, I have stubs if you need one, Rick

Cheers guys. Will try tightening the bearing and see if the screws or anything is missing. Hard to think about it without swearing.

It's spoiled a really good week too, got a new job. Had to go for a medical for it yesterday and see HR with some forms and all my certificates and ID. Whilst walking around the place and sat in the car afterwards I really couldn't believe that soon I'll be working there. Then this goes and happens I'm so bloody annoyed :(

Its just to remind you how lucky you are :D

So anybody interested in starting a lynching mob :nenau:nenau

If the screws are missing, you will need a couple of M4 x ~8mm.

Congrats on the new job Jim, I know exactly what that feels like, I remember having the same moment of awe the first day I pulled up in the car park at my new job at the school I'm currently at. I went from being so so depressed in a dead end no progression job at a horrible company who didn't appreciate me to having the best job I've ever had. I love it here and I can see the positive impact I have on the kids and their learning, I'll stay here for the pension if they look after me which they have been doing since I started here :thumb2

I'm in!!! We need the Yellow Terrano so we can Layer Cake style it

Poor workmanship is everywhere !

You must feel well gutted made worse when you could have done the job yourself if you had the time.

My local mechanic has pretty much retired, we have been using him since we moved in here in 1984!
He has given up his workshop a couple of years ago as the property he rented was sold for housing development when the landlord died. His kids who inherited the land were Londoners who kicked out the long standing 3 tenants.
He works as a sort of mobile mechanic but as he has no ramp so now I have stopped using him on our 4x4. I suspect he wants to finish completely but older loyal customers seem to still use him for small easy jobs.

At the moment am trying out a local garage in the village . I have used them twice now on the BMW and so far so good. Using a Technician from my old workplace that I have known for 13 years for Jeep repairs. Methinks he might be going elsewhere soon so that will mean the end to that source - he is a brilliant bloke.

Update

Well guys, we've taken the wheel and fixed hub off to find shards of metal inside the hub. The inner locking ring was floating around inside. The outer locking ring that the two screws go through had been fitted first and was hard and fast, obviously not taking up the adjustment on the bearing. One of the two screws is missing and the other one had been screwed into the outer locking ring but it's head had been totally ground off by the floating inner ring. Theres shards of metal in the bearings too.

I've been on the phone to the garage who are sending a recovery truck as I've told them it's not safe to drive which is the truth. So I'm just waiting for a call back from them.

 Can't believe they could stuff that up so much Jim!

Sorry you've had so much trouble Jim.

Bunch of muppets matey. Obviously no call back from them. To be honest I'm thinking about taking it on the chin and do the job myself as I'll know it's been done properly.
