Yes sounds like the one way clutch has failed or failing, the purpose of the clutch is to stop the engine driving the starter if you keep the key turned after engine start, which would over speed the starter badly, Rick

My local parts guy said he can get full motor for 110 plus vat, not sure if solenoid comes with motor though

It's one that's come off a truck and gone away faulty to be refurbished and come back rewound and rebuilt. I've got one on mine now from the same guys and it's been on there for a while and still going strong :thumbs

So, when I get a starter, does anyone have any advice on how to remove and fit and what tools are needed?, it looks like a proper bloody knuckle job

i find going in via the wing and i use moon shaped or s shaped spanners make it easier and i have a set of stumpy spanners too there is not much room for a lot else :thumb2

Used to be half an hour to change one, but my hands have lost their grip and I struggle now, but combination spanner in from the top to slacken the bolt then quarter drive socket with short extension to wind it out, then in through the wheel arch with combination spanner for the bottom bolt as before crack it then with something supporting the starter finger it out, all having done the electrical stuff first of course, Rick
