I have 2 IPF 900 Extreme water proof sport spot lights on the front of my bumper which are great and very far reaching. I've had a proper roof rack made and fitted and want some lights up there, so I have a couple of questions.

1. Is it possible to have fog lights roof mounted? Or would the light just reflect off the fog back at me?
2. Can I fit wide beam lights on the roof? Or would these also just reflect back on bad (rain) weather.

The lights would be just above where the windscreen starts.

Has anyone any advice or experience please.

i don't think it is legal to have fog lights on a roof rack. you can have spot or driving lights that only come on and go off with your main beam.

In law theres no such thing as spot/driving lamps they are all auxilary manin beams and beam pattern is irrelevant, they are defined from fog lights by

Placement - fog lights no higher than 1200mm
Switching - aux lights must extinguish when you dip lights
Angle - fogs must point down like dip beam does 1.3%

As for roof lights, try to place em slightly back from the front of the roof, this casts a shadow across the bonnet and windscreen which means you don't suffer from reflections. Beam pattern is purely a personal matter, I'm going for 2 spot/drive and 2 fog as its what I've got but do have another 2 spot/drive somewhere if I don't like that set up.

Not for highway use - max allowed is 24W which in reality means 21W has they don't do 24w bulbs. You can have a separate one as cosmic has but it needs to be fitted with a separate switch not on the reversing light switch in the gearbox.

Hi Jim,yes i have a single spot on the back of the rack for working or when i have the caravan on to see what I'm doing,it's the same as the front ones.
Just wired up to a plug that i plug into the auxiliary power socket in the boot!!

Roof Lights

Hi Everyone

Wow thanks for the heaps of info. I can now make a well informed decision. Thanks again.

Hi NNMan

Having wasted ages trying to find a good strong rack that's not for a Land Rover I had this made. I have had a lot of interest so I'm thinking of going into production. Racks of this type and size are expensive but I think mine will be competitive if it's quality people are after. I could make any rack to any size and all professionally welded with or without powder coating. This one with powder coating would retail at about £460 + vat

I take it your rear bars (on canopy) are the same height as the ones on the cab? Mine wouldent be but thats no biggy! I like it, it certianly looks solid, I take it the tent fits nicely with room at the back for other stuff? Did you ever get that rear diff guard?

Thanks NNMan, it's as solid as rock. The canopy bars are just a few mm higher but there's about enough flex for it to make no dofference.

No, still not found a rear diff guard. May have to have one of those made as well !!

Well it would probably be the cheapest option, did you see the one at purenissan?

robbo was gonna get one made local to me i was gonna take my maverick across for them to use as template 4x4 r us think there called millers road warwick i can take my navara there as patern for anyone.

how do you get the wires from the lights to the dash switch and battery, drill holes in the roof? :x

Have not tried it my self but as far as I'm aware you can run wires down the door seal and under the bonnet that way.

Hi leo23,i just ran the wire from the spots down the door seal and brought it in where the wire loom for the door goes through bulkhead, also brought feed from battery with inline fuse, through a bung next to the heater pipes to relay, already had a blank switch plate on the left of steering wheel,so use this to put the switch.picked up the feed from inside the cab for the high beam, and a good earth..!!
I'm sure there is a wiring diagram in the downloads Workshop 30
Job done
