We did our bit, and had to keep a car park closed for where the procession was to form, and direct the people who would normally use the carpark we were closing, to the one over the road... and then 2 brief road closures to allow the procession to exit our car park, travel along a short stretch of road, before turning into the high street, and the reverse upon their return.
The Carpark across the road, was a multi-story NCP one, which would not normally be open on a Sunday, and was free for the day, so no hardship at all for anyone to use, other than their initial fear they might have to pay a charge....
The day started with a Scout leader, who was there to be in the parade telling us we were jobsworths and Jokes, who take Health and Safety too far, and he had parked in that carpark for 20 years with no problems... He then went wheel spinning across the road, and got parked in the first spot inside the door of the NCP, so was basically no worse off, other than having to cross a road, and go into a nice open hard space where the groups could form in safety... He was just a Numpty, and for me, a worry that he is the sort of person who is setting an example to the young adults of tomorrow.
Other than him, the day went very well, with most people saying how much nicer it was to not have to worry about the kids, and cars all mixing in one place. Just a few motorists were inconvenienced for 10 mins or so, when the procession returned at the end, and people took a bit longer to clear the road into the carpark, but all the waiting cars were well behaved, switched off their engines, and waited.
The up side were a lot of people were very impressed with the way it all went and the local MP for Chatham stopped and thanked us individually as he passed our control points, saying that because of cuts, they were originally going to cancel the whole thing, and if it had not been for RayNet and SE4x4R stepping in, it would not have gone ahead the last 2 years. We had just one police officer assigned to the whole thing, so no cost to the community, other than some council road signs and cones dropped off and picked up, and the loss of car park takings for a day. Even the Police officer, was a "Special".
One nice touch was a Spitfire flew over as it was finishing..
