legalities using cooking oil

i know there are loads of threads and posts about using svo on here and i will read through them when i get chance but i thought id just ask as someoine will probably know anyway.
legaly where do i stand if i start using svo (mixedabout 50%) in the mav i have used it fine a few years back in a terrano so am not worried about it causing probs its just that near me at the min theres a lot of tank dipping going on and peiople getting done using red diesel so wondered what i need to do to keep on the right side of the law.

You are allowed to to do your own oil/fuel up to 2500 litres I think.After that you can pay your own duty to HM rip off gov. dept.
So dont worry about it. You could also get bio diesel in a filling station every now and then and keep the reciept in the car for the off chance of a dip

No need to be remotely devious and carry any receipts to cover, HMRC roadside dip for red & kero not svo or wvo. If you got stopped for vege oil and they were into you its too late to be a smart arse. You either pay up what they demand or the car gets it. Doesnt matter whats in the tank at that point.

Furthermore your car on a pessimistic level will manage 10 000 mile plus pa running on 100% SVO/WVO so if youre 50/50 I reckon youve got 20 000 pa in the bank.

Finally, think about it, how can they prove how much you have used if you make a genuine slight glitch in your calculations ? which I presume is whats fuelling the worry ?

Jnno theres no registration required mate.

You just put your SVO in and if you are worried, keep your receipts to show the amount you've purchased to evidence its less than 2500 litres per annum.

But as daved says, the police/revenue are after red diesel abuse, not chip fat!

It was different a few years back BEFORE they introduced this 2500 litre limit, because there was a big scare that it was going to result in widespread tax avoidance.....what they didn't know then, but do now, is that relatively very few engines can deal with SVO (fuel pumps especially can be very fussy but the Terrano/Maverick are on the OK list), so its a drop in the ocean, hence the new limit to put it out of the revenues sphere of interest.

Went to Brookers cash and carry yesterday.

Bought 80 litres (4 x 20L tins) of new veg oil for £62 which is 78p per litre!

Worked out that this will save £35 on what the same amount of diesel would have cost at £1.22 per litre. Will use it at 50% with regular diesel until I'm happy that there aren't going to be any frosts to make it go gloopy.

Nice thing is that veg oil is VAT free which keeps the price down, and gives a good feeling that I'm not being shafted by the treasury!

Ran mine successfully on nearly neat wvo refined and winterised through the -15 frosts etc. No issues at all. Well there was one
I get fuel at 64p a liter inc vat and claim back the 5% vat on it and spent the savings on my wine habit
