I got some LED dash lights from Darwin way back and just found them again in the pile at the end of the table :augie
I found two types in the bag, one with a normal domed shape led and the other with a flat end on the led:nenau
Anybody know what the difference is?

one is domed shaped and the other is flat on the end.

LEDs must be connected the correct way round, the diagram may be labelled a or + for anode and k or - for cathode (yes, it really is k, not c, for cathode!). The cathode is the short lead and there may be a slight flat on the body of round LEDs. If you can see inside the LED the cathode is the larger electrode (but this is not an official identification method).

Cheers Briggy but that doesn't really help I'm afraid. These blubs are direct dash replacements. I understand the polarity thing, even though these dont appear to labelled:eek:
I'll take some pics tomorrow:thumbs

the flat 1s are called smd or surface mount which r the newer type on led i belive they r brighter then the old dome type :thumbs

I know what you mean pete just I don't know nothing about dash lights.

The round standard type probably spread the light more, Where as the flat top probably direct a bit more.

The above don't understand us welsh boyos. :thumb2

Ah ha cheers guys I'm now sticking the flat tops in me dash :D
I've modified the dash using one of the unused light holes so it now says GAS :lol It'll come on when the LPG is a burnin' :naughty

their is no real difference tbh and the smd led's are different

the rounded ones are a more direct light so used more for warning lights in a dash and the flattened ones are a larger spread so better used in the dials and things to give an even spread

smd's are surface mounted and need to be wired and glued in place so are not suitable for dash lamps

i wouldnt want one of them then as i know how hot smd's get when they are closed in

we use them in the marine hobby as they are the brightest you can get (well the new ones any way) but they dont half create alot of heat
