Done a bit of reading and it turns out that the oil seal is in the axle and it is not the swivel thing that keeps the oil in.

The seal on the half shaft sits in the axle and keeps the diff oil in the axle and the swivel seal thing keeps the CV grease in the hub.

Both of which are now leaking both sides.

There is a lot of play in the NSF hub and I think it is the wheel bearing and the swivel bearings:(

has anyone used the Japanese 4x4 Parts Kit
http://www.japanese4x4parts.co.uk/n...overhaul--front-wheel-bearing-kit-10541-p.asp

any clues before I get stuck in and end up smelling of old Tom Cat P155 (EP90:rolleyes:)

:nenau

It's far too difficult, just get rid of and give it to me :augie

Yep :thumbs

Sorry bud, assumed you meant the axle seal! Yeh its just really scrapers that are on the the swivel itself, just to stop the dirt etc getting in at the cv and contaminating/removing the grease.

It's usually one of the swivel bearings going that causes that seal to start leaking.

Never used the Japanese 4x4 kit but a full swivel hub rebuild kit is the way to go. I got the garage to do mine when my offside seal went due to a collapsed swivel bearing.

I had heard from the Aussie forums that the axle seal was a bugger to do which is why I handed it to the garage - I'm glad I did as it took them 3 goes (draining the axle each time) to get it seated correctly!

Got the kit from Japanese 4x4 parts for £140 and look how many bits you get:eek:

Knocked a few bearings out and pushed a few back in again.

my hands were covered in too much bearing and CV grease to take many more photos. but it did all go back together nicely and now there's no play at all:clap

All in all or one side, if I hadn't taken too long to find the ball joint splitter and a seized lower bearing cap about 3 hrs.

just the other side to do next weekend now:(

Good effort matey :thumb2

It'll be worth it in the end and just think, now you've done one side, as long as there's no issues the other side you'll be a tad quicker as you're more prepared

Top job bud :thumbs

Looking forward to seeing your Trol on the Yorkshire trip :D

Thanks gents:thumbs
The small needle bearing race took a bit o thinking about and some bent 8mm rod to knock it out from the inside.
But it was actually an enjoyable afternoons work.
Also knowing that all the dust , mud and water will now be kept out of the spinny bits for a few years to come:thumb2

You tackled it mate and that's the main thing, I see 3 upsides to this;

1. You saved a fortune not putting it into a garage
2. You furthered your knowledge of your truck and documented it for other members
3. You have a working car again :thumb2

I might even do a video log of the other side.
Only problem is the amount of grease involved...

Japanese 4x4 ? Do you mean Milners ?
I've got to do mine soon ish but thought the imported kit from Aus was better quality :nenau
Well done by the way , no more death wobble

:lol :lol

That's the exact same reason I didn't have as many pictures as I should have of my manual hub conversion
