leaking diesel

hi guys,my 94 mistrals developed a fuel leak,cant see where its coming from but it seems to be directly in the pump area,its a constant drip,is it safe to drive like this for a while or is it likely to get worse,have purchased a seal kit for the pump but need to drive it about 30kms to the mechanic,would prefer to drive rather than trailer but dont want to break down at a major intersection.it runs fine though .your thoughts\experiences cheers pete

Can not be specific without knowing exactly where the leak is coming from, but at least it is not dripping on the exhaust, and 30 k is no far, so as long as you can stay free of being pulled by the law you should be OK as long as it is only a drip, if it is more than a drip then I am sure in NZ you will be pulled, Rick

hi,cheers rick,im pretty sure its leaking from the pump,every now and then if you parked on a hill youd come out and see a we trail of deisel on the ground,coudnt track it down and until now it didnt do it on the flat.bought a seal kit for the pump last week and as luck would have it all of a sudden its leaking all the time,when i had it at the mechanics last week he said he could smell deisel but couldnt find a leak,it will be easy now lol cheers pete

I'm not saying it's not the pump but another thing to check is the Injector spill pipes. Theres a pipe connects all the injectors to take away excess fuel. On the end is a rubber end cap, they perish and leak. Don't forget the big fan and air flow can push liquid all over the place too.

hi,its off the road for three weeks untill the mechanics free to do it,its also started leaking water from just under where the thermostat mounts,hes pretty sure the deisel leak will be an easy fix,and he said the water leak is quite common for this model as well,so fingers crossed,cheers pete

It might be a shot in the dark, but it might be worth checking the engine oil level. I had a similar issue which coincided with an engine oil level past the mark. I have an Elsbett veg oil conversion on my Mav, so my level can rise if I'm not careful!

Could be leaking diesel where the leak off pipe from the injectors joins the return fitting at the injection pump, I have had them leaking here in the past when the rubber pipe splits at the end where it is pushed on to the steel pipe.

well finally got it back today,what a nightmare,the water leak is fixed but turned into a major,the long bolt that goes thru the thermostat housing broke,took mechanic 4 hours to get it out and retapped etc,did a top seak kit on the pump ,got it home and its leaking worse than ever,so now its off to another mechanic to remove the pump send it away and rekit it.original mechanic doesnt want to see it again,(b### deisels etc buy a petrol was his response)just wondering whether i should replace the waterpump at the same time,your thoughts cheers pete

well if he cant find a diesel leak then he aint worth his salt anyway, take it to another mechanic and when you find a good mechanic stick with him, they are worth their weight in gold.
hopefully he replaced all your coolant with something other than water, i would check if i was you :thumbs

Change the water pump as that is the only place water cam leak other than the rad or your hoses which are all easy to see leaking or not.

What about the diesel leak.?

still leaking deisel and water off to a deisel specialist on monday,not going to be cheap but at least it will be fixed(fingers crossed)
