2001 Terrano, the LCD display partly works... sometimes. Is there a fix or is it a case of spending big or don't you worry about it and leave it?

Yeah there is lots about this, my left hand side is dark at night. I don't worry about it. Seems to be common and not a real way of fixing if I'm not mistaken. Think its a replace and start again jobby :thumb2

I think the complete dash is about £250

If it's the mileage display that's playing up then this is very common & seems to be worse when the weather is colder, some have either repaired their own or sent them away to be repaired & I think the probs is down to dry joints of solder.

Sounds like you've got a couple of dash bulbs out Alex get some new ones & fit them & yes even you can manage that:lol

Does anyone know if mileage is stored on the dash unit or the ecu? If I replaced the lcd from another car would it display my mileage?

The mileage is stored on the clocks, when looking for a T2 saw a few with what looked like low mileage but reading the service history it was wrote in clocks changed at 30K eg but the following service stamp had a mileage of say 5K. When the mileage is stored on the ECU it's easy to turn the mileage clock back to zero if you want vauxhall is dead easy just need the opcom software & you can change almost every setting on the ECU's but the other car makers are the same VW is another easy one:augie

You must be kidding :lol I'm not stripping the dash apart, I can already picture a terrano with a pile of broken bits n me looking bewildered :naughty

my clocks currently show 55k
I was too confused when I brought mine when looking throught the mots.
mine were changer at 40k prior to purchace.
it is a very common problem. a lot of people don't fix them.

I nearly brought another one with dodgy clocks and the seller was pretty sure they could be changed for about 100 quid.:nenau

Yes they can I've got good set for £100 there is more than 1 type though

It's just a dry solder joint on the rear of the panel, my old 2.7 used to suffer with this, if you take the clock panel out and give the back a squeeze, they come back to life. I just packed the back of my one out with hard foam between the panel and the plastic inner part of the dash.

Managed to repair mine, took the back off the clocks. There's a long line of about 20 pins on the circuit board.
Just got a soldering iron and gently warmed each one up and put some flux on them.
I didn't put any more solder on as the pins are very close together and didn't want them extra solder to short them out

Put it all back together and now it works fine

Thanks, might give that a go, I'm reasonably handy with a soldering iron How hard is it to get the clocks out?

Do I assume that there is no speedo cable, it's electric?

Is there a throttle cable or is that fly by wire?

There's screws and clips holding th plastic trims on.
Just take your time and be gentle or the clips will break
No speedo cable just two multi plugs these can be tight
It's also a good time to check all the bulbs in the dash there's about 7 or 8 in little holders.
I had 3 out.
And it's fly by wire

TIP:-
If you change one lamp, then change them all, they are cheap enough.:augie
On the Picasso several lamps had gone, so I changed the failed ones, then a few weeks later another had gone...:doh

They don't like being disturbed when they are near the end of their life.:thumbs

Or consider LED replacements.

Just to say that I have just fixed the fan speed from No4 to all speeds. Just one link needed on the rheostat :clap

You have to remove the lower dash panels, below the steering and, I think the steering column surround, this will allow you access to the other screws you need.
