guys,

as im now looking for a new terrano, I realise that ideally, I need a 2000 model terrano (tax seems to creep up 2001 onwards...). I have seen a couple of honest adverts, saying that the dash has been replace, and so reads a different mileage.

So, with this in mind, im worried now when I see the odd terrano, with less than 100k mile son the clock. Although I appreciate I could probably ifnd out if the mileage Is true or not through the MOT's, i'd like to know why the dashboards that are fitted, don't get calibrated in some way??

is it not like £30 a year more for 01 to like 04?

I remember there have been problems with the later speedo pods with the LCD display, so swapping is one option, repairing, probably the more expensive option.
Also some grey imports that require mph not kilometres. :augie

My old 2001 dash had issues with the lcd readout, I found by adding packing behind the panel and then screwing the pod back into the dash, It would solve the problem for a while. I'm sure it's just a dry joint.
I don't have any issues with my 05 terry dash though, that's working fine, the radio on the other hand, I find when it's cold, the lcd readout is pants but as the car warms up, the readout starts to look normal...I can live with this though :)

I think I was looking at the same car on Ebay:lol

I would imagine that while it should be technically possible, Nissan deliberately don't make a tool for doing it, otherwise, in the wrong hands it would be too easy for the unscrupulous dealers to rewind the clock.

A lot of cars do their highest mileage on contract, in the first 3 years, before they take any MOT's, imagine if the cars could all clock up unlimited mileage in that time, and then the dealers could clock them back to 30K, and sell them as 3 year old low mileage cars... I think it would be just too tempting for the majority of them to resist...

Easier and safer to just fit a new speedo, and make a note on the Nissan Database, and in the service manual.

Not so easy to do on a test drive, but if you look on the back of practically all the car parts, there is a date stamp, normally in the form of a grid with dots in. While this it the date of manufacture rather than fitting, it would still need to be older than the cars registered date, so if you looked and saw it was of a newer date, you would know it had been changed.

cheers chap,

yeah I understood it would be difficult to "clock" the dash readings, I wondered if a dealer could do it, but it makes sense that its not really possible. I was sure, in the back of my head, that it was possible to calibrate the dash in a Fiat Stilo like what I have, to get the correct readings, but I may have misread.

SO, what I need to make sure then, is any car I look at I need the MOT history to verify the mileage-because its more likely that on the new LED dash Terranos, the dash has been replaced, than it is in the older ones (if the LED displays are a common faulty part)

righty.

Reckon you are righty...:lol

I did read when I was originally looking into the T2, that the post 2000 ones had the dash problem and it was very common. I think all the ones we looked at when we were trying to buy, had it in varying degrees, which along with preferring the "Non-wood" effect dash, and not having the electronic odometer was the deciding factor for going for the 1999 one.

I am not sure, but I would think that the speedo was less likely to have gone in the first 3 years, so any mileage change should show up on the VOSA MOT data you can look at online. You just need the MOT number and car reg to check it out.

Weird thing is, our LCD clock in the dash, is fine, but the LCD one in the Nissan radio was bad. When I had a look at the radio, you could see the flexible printed wiring board running from the main board to the display was oxidised, and looked like it was drawn with a soft black pencil. The end was epoxied onto the main board, but not sure if that was original, or where someone before me had tried to fix it. Either way, it was not going to be an easy fix as the printed wiring board actually goes into the glass LCD panel, so can not be changed with out changing the whole display, so I gave up and fitted a new radio.:doh

crikey!! something to watch out for, as I quite fancy keeping the original stereo if I can-because I like the 2000 model centre dash and radio-looks nice. I checked some 1999 ones, but there's not many, ill have another look and see how they compare-im sure there are some interior differences where I preferred the 2000 model?! I don't want anything higher, I cant think what year it is, but they take away the passenger grab handle...and I want that, and I like the little shelf too.

Just seen your other post, I never realised that the Airbags depended on the model, I always thought it was a year thing...

IIRC, and Ryan probably knows the answer to this, but I thought I saw fixing holes for the diagonal handles like they have in the rear, on the front "A" pillar and roof, so that may be an answer to getting "Half Pint" in and out the car if you find one without the front dash handle (Just checking now how far away you are, in case she reads this:lol)

:lol:thumbs not a bad idea though to be honest! I think if I have side steps (which I didn't have on my old Mav) she could step up, grad the pillar handle and get in easy enough

thing is, I haven't told her this yet.....Im planning a basic 2" lift and possible bigger tyres....nothing major....

Clive, you need to open the door for her and help her in like any gent would, you won't regret it.:naughty

If that doesn't work, get a milk crate, they make excellent steps.:thumbs

I'll get me coat.........................

Like this I'm guessing

The ones with airbags don't seem to have the dash handles, or the little shelf

I dont think any terranos have handles on the A pillars, the LWB have them on the B pillers for rear passengers

I have a 2000 Import R20

You may need to ( just as I had to ) run a soldering iron along the dry joints at the rear of the LCD to clear the dry joints. The rest of the spedo has been fine.

The LCD on the radio gave up the ghost along time ago and is now unreadable.

The only issues I've really has apart from a failed input shaft bearing on the gearbox is the different sizes of brake drums on the rear of these imports - larger than the standard.

When I pulled the plastic trim that runs down the side of the screen off, there looks like the holes and an angled flat for mounting a handle are already there. I will have to have a proper look next time I have the trim off.

Hmmm, when I had the roof lining out of mine, there was no mounting holes there I'll look tomorrow......infact, I probably have a pic on my phone...I'll have a look. I also want to mount handles there, I mounted one over the drivers door on the roof as there was already holes up there, I've got loads of the spare handles
