Help please. my series 3 has a 3 bearing diesel fitted which I think is from a 2a. It starts well and on tick over and when building the revs up has no smoke at all but if I give it a quick blat on the accelerator a lot of white smoke comes out :O(

I've tried adjusting the pump ,admittedly not in every position , with no success.

A couple of things that might be relevant.

It's fitted with a pre heat system, lots of wires and pipes.

Only has 1/4 tank of fuel which is probably a year old.

Any suggestions?

It knows that its no good... Its trying to self combust... Just help it on its way :sly :D :naughty

On a serious note...
How is the power.?
Does it drive normally.?
Just smoke.?
How longs it been standing.?

Can't torch my new toy.....yet ;O)

Powers fine and drives and pulls ok , no miss fires or bad sounds so sure it's not gasket or pistons.........famous last words ;O)

I think it stood for nearly a year before I got it but was started every day.

I think i'd change all the filters
Change the oil with engine flush
Fill it up with just diesel & additives ( RedX )
Go from there
Wouldnt of thought it was anything major if it all sounds & runs ok...
Any leaks.?

Personally, having screwed up in the past , I would not use an engine flush yet. I've no idea what's causing the symptoms but by the description its unlikely to be fixed by using engine flush.

Shiting any crap around or removing useful crap could cause more strange features ;) deal with them one at a time.

its probably caused by that green oval shaped thing on the front...

i suggest try to convince it its a nissan

ok seriously could be a sticky valve or something whats it like after a run ?

take no notice of these jap lovers brian, in 30yrs there motors will be recycled into land rovers lol, and i own one before anyone jumps on me, but only cos "swmbo" wants another one. green oval rules.:clap

google land rover forums and ask there, they will help get it sorted. :thumb2

i know mate, just having a wind up lol, sold my disco, being picked tomorrow:thumb2

Three possibilities if there is white smoke from the exhaust

one - the choosing of a new pope, Unlikely...................

two - cylinder head gasket, but you'd get white smoke on tickover and less when the throttle is used, the engine will sound like its missing on one or more cylinders too.. uneven tickover, lumpy at irregular intervals

three - water in the fuel, when you hit the throttle and get past say 1200 rpm, you go into steam train mode...........the engine will also sound strained when you rev it, as tho it can't just quite get there........

Reason I know this lot, my boat has an ancient BMC............. 2.52 steam engine :)

Could be the redex in fuel system has gone straight to pump

would'nt water in the fuel cause pump failure ?, i was led to believe water will stop the pump instantly as it does not compress and the pump will lock up, or worse still water in the bore, will act like a ball bearing banging around, hammering the piston, i have seen this happen before and it makes a right mess. :doh

Wouldn't compress any more than diesel Tez, most liquids will have the same properties. I suspect its the age of the diesel itself thats the issue, plus a bit of contamination?

Might be partial fuel blockage causing it to suck air in at the joints or just porous pipes sucking air, this causes poor atomisation of the fuel as the air compresses and theres insufficient pressure at the injectors and thus a bad burn and white smoke - different to over rich black smoke.
