Hi all, just bought a terrano 2, 2.7td auto. I'm not used to big motors, but I'm sure this should have a bit more pull than it does.

I've had the car about a week, it looked great and had low mileage, bought it from an old boy that had it 3 years and looked after it well. He explained about the overide switch and the power mode switch and said to keep it in hold position and in over ride mode and I'll get better mpg.

I've tried the different settings and it just don't go. Its ok about town, nice and steady but struggles up even the slightest slope.

I've read up on air flow meters and turbos etc. It seems to be a common fault. But as mines a 95 it don't have the meter. I'm not a mechanic but I do know a bit about cars. Just need pointing in the right direction.

Hope its not a costly problem cos I've just had to get rid of my last 7 seater cos the engine was knackered.

Can anyone help please?

Cheers Mark

i had this problem in mine , i put the switch in the middle which is auto , it then decides itself whether to go into power mode or hold ( economy ) .... once i got used to it , it was the bogs dollox :thumb2

i used to set off in auto , then as soon as i got going i used to flick it to hold ( economy ) unless i hit a hill , then flick back to auto

good idea to service it /check fluid levels etc , particularly atf level , look in links and downloads for checking atf on nissan mistral :thumb2

I've tried the auto and power mode, took off overdrive and put my foot down. It feels faster but then holds, like its pulling back, this is why I think theres a problem

putting your foot down hard will only put it into power mode automatically

it took me ages to get used to it , but once i did , it was the nuts .... just , to reiterate ......set off in auto mode then switch to hold or economy mode , unless going up a hill then leave it in auto mode , acccelerate gently and smoothly or it will go into power mode which holds it in gear , its not the fastest car off the block , but once you get used to the box its great , like you i thought i was doing something wrong , or something was wrong , but its not like a " normal " auto ... brill once ya get used to it tho :thumb2

I've seen some other threads that say if it doesn't have a air flow meter it can be things like air leaks, or blockages, I've read something about a little mesh filter than may be the cause on a filter.

I didn't mean before that I just banged my foot down, I did accelerate slowley until right down in power mode, but it just holds. Maybe I'm not explaining it very well

now then you say lack of power? dose it rev or do the revs drop off like its being starved of fuel ect? autos do drive different to a manual you say it struggles going up a slight hill dose the auto box kick down into lower gear?

sure your have lot of help here on this site so sure it will get sorted:thumb2

looks like you two have met..

still beat you on the manual though briggie mate..

as briggie say.. takes a bit of getting use to.. not that i know.. briggie has an auto

holding back

Has the mini filter inside the pump been cleaned as this can reduce power and even cause serious running problems, like no revs over 2 K.

However because no age of truck i am assuming it has a mini filter.

Has a TDI got a mini filter?

paulp

has it been serviced? the first thing i would do is change the fuel filter!! and air filter if this has not been done?

I've had autos before, but not a td. My last auto was a cavalier v6 which was very quick, now I know I can't compare to this because of the difference in engine. Saying I haven't owned a nissan isn't strictly true in a sense.

I had an old cf bedford motorhome that was fitted with a d21 pickup engine. 2.5d, Now this was painfully slow and had no turbo, this is a turbo model and it ain't far off the same in lacking in power.

Maybe your right, I might not be driving it properly, but I'm not 100% convinced.

I know it aint a sports car and I aint gonna get 0-60 in 6 seconds but better than 60 seconds would be a start :lol

The last owner said he serviced it, he mentioned the air filter, but not sure about the fuel filter

try the switch in the auto ( middle ) position all the time and accelerate gently .....if it still holds , flick to economy mode ( bottom setting ) ..... hope that helps :thumb2 ..... as for other items like servicing cleaning filters etc .... highly reccomended :thumb2

The revs don't drop, they hold, its like if you drive a manual and your climbing gears and you over rev in 3rd say
