lack of power?

Not sure if i'm expecting too much!! i have a 2.7t/d deisel Mistral automatic towing a swift challenger 420se caravan. I took it out for the first time this week end was very disappointed with the performance - car drives fine when solo, soon as you put the van on the back, its like driving with the hand brake on! No I havent left the hand brake on!!!!!!!

Has been serviced, new injection pump etc any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated or any suggestions that could improve the performance .

Bear in mind if its the non-intercooler TD then its only got 100bhp - if it otherwise drives normally it might just be a power issue....I expect one of the vanners will tell us how heavy this unit is....

i think your caravan weighs about 1100kgs, so if your truck is a non intercooler @100bhp and auto, i would think it could struggle a bit especially with hills, have you checked van and truck for binding brakes? you say truck has been serviced did you do it, or a garage, if garage did they change fuel/air filters, im just giving you a few pointers to look into. do you know anyone with another terrano with a tow bar so you can compare the two?. :thumbs

thanks for replies K&N filter fuel filter changed new brakes and caravan just been serviced looks like i'm expecting too much!!!! didn't know it was only 100BHP !!!

what speed did you get at what sort of terrain. you might need to drive the box, selecting
gears. the mistral uses a 3 speed plus overdrive, might need to lock out the o/d. think
theres a mode so go speed/sport for faster upchanges.

certainly one member towed a bessacarr 550 @~1400kg and that moved though knew
inclines.

just been out for first time with my rig ( see siggy ) van nets 1336kg, gross 1660kg
though only bits for a night away. came up bank on m18 away from A1 towards M1
at 40-50mph in 4th. certainly need to stir that box, drop a cog get turbo singing but
gets there. On flat saw 65mph which is truish 60mph so happy as thats nice speed
for 5th and 2500rpm.

The intercooler on the TDi adds 25 bhp.....K&N filter will help a bit. Of course TTT2 is talking manual gearbox but I know your auto will be running at lower revs.....my older auto TDi does 1000rpm per 30 mph so would cruise at indicated 90 at only 3000rpm...on my manual its screaming at about 3800rpm.

Point is its harder to pull from lower revs.

Has your Mistral got overdrive and the Sport/All/Snow switch? If so I always found when towing a heavy load that its easier to get up to speed by selecting Sport (which just makes the box hang on a bit longer before changing up) and switching overdrive out....switch it back in when you're up to speed....

turned off overdrive but seemed over reving but when switched on just died away tried all aspects with gear box 60ish on the flat but dies as soon as it see an incline afraid cant realy remember speeds and revs but would have been helpfull in this situation have switch in middle position power/hold a/t i wonder if it may be a problem with the switch it can be tempramental with switching diffrent modes what about fitting a hi-clone ?

LOL I am sure there are still people on here who think Hiclones work. Thats why they are so widely advertised and used I don't think.

Hiclones were developed in Australia in response to a specific problem, that they did help with. But that problem wasn't to do with fuel-injected diesel motors. In fact it wasn't to do with any fuel injected motor. It was for the prevailing (in those days) big block petrol engines with carbs. Scientific studies in the UK proved that even the best carbs on the planet still didn't atomise the fuel probably, with the result that it ran down the inlet manifold walls and didn't burn as efficiently when it finally got to the cylinder.

The Hiclone helped to maintain the atomised fuel in air suspension and helped a lot with fuel burn and thus economy.

But fuel injected motors don't suffer from that problem.

The Hiclone site has all kinds of pseudo-scientific b/s but there are plenty of other sites (Mythbusters I think was one?) that have tested these things and found zero effect on any modern engine.

I did a lot of research, including talking to the people at Harwell who did the original carb study and decided at the end of the day it was a waste of time- and that was when they were something like sixty quid a piece for something that looked like one of my kids knocked it up in DT out of an old baked bean tin.

Just my opinion though you understand.

Had a PSI Powerbox in my T2, plugs straight in no messing and Mont is now using it in his T2.

You can't get a box for a non intercooled 2.7TD engine, Mistral, T2 or Mav.
