Hi, when I engage into 4x4 mode, do full lock and drive forward there is a loud knocking noise and a slight judder from under the car. Only happens in 4x4 and not 2 wheel drive.
Can anyone advise and help how to solve this problem please?

If it definetly only happens in for wheel drive sounds like driveshaft are you sure it doesnt do it in 2wd as would have said steering stops want grease

its definately only on full lock in 4x4 mode. How could it be the drive shafts in any event?

are you putting it in 4wd on tarmac or similar grippy surface?

Yes but did it before aswell and the banging never hapened

Do not use 4x4 on grippy surfaces like tarmac!! There is no center diff on the transfer box.

It will cause damage

Have a go on slippy surface like gravel or wet grass and see if it does the same noise.

This. They really don't like tight turns when in 4-wheel drive and it'll judder because the front and rear axles want to rotate at different speeds, but can't.

As said about the slippery surface only but also won't hurt to grease the steering stops.

if it only does it in 4 wheel then I suspect the auto hubs are complaining pull them off and have a good inspect, it will do it on full lock as this is the time when most stress is applied especially on tarmac, Rick

Ive tried all the above and i still keeps happening

When you checked the front hubs were they full of grease ?

This is a bad thing if they are as it prevents the driveshaft locking into posision and this could be the problem, they may connect in a straight line but keep pulling out on full lock.

Have you stripped them down and done a full re-clean ? (Dont use grease use some copperslip spray) i had a problem like this and found that was the answer.

I would also have said stearing stops too but that would be in 2 and 4 wheel drive.

Can you locate where the noise is from by getting someone else to drive while you inspect it and give us some more information.

There are warnings above that you SHOULDN'T be trying to drive on tarmac in four-wheel drive. The transmission really doesn't like it, especially when on full lock.

Ive tried all above but still have very loud banging on full lock in 4x4 !!

This sounds like a transmission issue, you are winding thisngs up so tight that something in the transfer box is jumping teeth. Be carefull with these transfer boxes, they are not indestructable. As many have said here, they are fine for everything apart from tarmac.

If it only happens in 4x4 on full lock, then the answer is simples...:nenau

Don't drive on full lock when in 4 wheel drive.:thumb2:thumb2

Transmission wind up, the fact that the inner wheel is going around a smaller circle than the outer, different sized wheels front and rear, or side to side caused by tyre wear, all add to wind up.

Something has to slip as a last resort, or break.

Your choice:doh

Also check your universal joints on both prop shafts, not mentioned yet.
