Firstly Merry Christmas One and All.

I hope someone could shed a little light on a problem thats just started on my 95 Maverick Td.
When i drive along it sounds like a knocking noise if i dip the clutch it stops (release bearing i thought) it dont make the noise when its standing still. Any help would be greatly appreciated the car has done 115,000 if it is the clutch any idea what sort of money i would be looking at.

Check both the front and rear anti roll bar links, those may very well be the problem.

if it is the release bearing, like mine you only get the noise when you press the clutch.can you pin point where the noise is coming from?
could be a wheel bearing or maybe the rear prop shaft needs greasing.if you can find where the noise is coming from then youv'e got a better chance of someone on here giving you the right solution.

thanks jim i will get under and have a look have a good chrismas

Thanks for reply zippy is it ok to take th roll bar off completely,Happy christmas

I'm afraid that sounds to me like it could be gearbox related.

As has been said release bearing would only show up whilst the pedal is being pressed whereas gearbox moises tend to be whilst the clutch is engaged.

How is it when you free wheel out of gear with the clutch up and also under engine breaking downhill?

cheers elty if it was the wheel bearing or prop why would it stop when i dip the clutch? i havent had chance to get out there yet to check underneath. Will let you all know how get on thanks everyone for help

Happy christmas

knocking noise

Hi all ! i am getting a similar knocking noise, but not to worried as i can get it to knock when stationay and without engine running! If i rock my mistral quit hard or lock round quit hard and pull away slowly it makes noise also will nock if you use a fair bit of articulation on axles.
could this be as stated earlyer a anti roll bar or bush problem..

Cheers zippy! Got to book her in to have fuel air lock problem that has just reared its ugly head sorted so when they find the athending clip or pipe i will get them to replace bushes at same time. Do yo think its worth changing to poly bush or just replace with normal fitment.

no idea, ive not changes the back ones just the front ones on arb.. with poly

also have two new drop links fitted.

I have got a knocking noise from the nearside front when you rock the vehicle from side to side, so last night I checked the suspension, and the lower "drop link" ( ARB ball joint) is very worn, and a crowbar under the link proves it's the link, so I v'e just ordered 2 new ones from Milners. After looking at the download seems an easy fix.
I had a set fitted a few years ago at MOT time, so they are worth checking.

I'm hoping to replace them wihout jacking the vehicle up or removing the wheels.
Can it be done without jacking her up or removing the wheels as per the download, they seem easy to get to?

Best regards, Rustic

I haven't done one for ages but from what I can remember I used two jacks to adjust the height at each side to take the tension off the joint. I also prefer the polly bushes instead of the standard black rubber bushes, the rubber ones seemed too soft.

i did mine with the wheels on the ground no problem:thumb2
had to get grinder out to cut off the old droplinks but easily done once the arb is removed.

Thanks Jim, thanks Elty, Angle grinder sounds a good idea... ( 2nd best tool in my tool box after a big hammer).
Removing the ARB will allow me access to the link, good idea thanks.
Parts should arrive Tuesday, I'll try to do before weekend.
I'll just get out the WD40 again, just in case they unbolt easily.
Thanks again, Rustic

I had a similar front end knock. Turned out to be the front ARB which I binned. The ride is much better on road, so off it will stay.

Lee. ;)

I had a similar knock at the front too - turned out I'd just run the wife over and she was hanging on to the front bumper shouting me to stop....:doh

Well ARB joints replaced. I removed the ARB after taking off the front steel plate from under the engine. The lower nuts came undone easily and the ARB was easy to remove. Removing the other nuts from the ARB was easy with the bar on the floor. Whole job took just over the hour without removing wheels or jacking up. However it took 20 minutes to collect all the tools together when I had finished, after selecting deep sockets for this different allen keys for that ...
As per the ARB download, the holes in the wish bones were slightly elongated, I cannot see how this can be prevented in the current design.
Incidentally, how tight should the lower mounting nut be, I tightened it until the straight sided rubber spacers were slightly curved like the originals.. thus ( )
Best regards, Rustic
