Started to get a grinding/creaking/knocking sound from the rear end. Sounds almost rotational ? Worse when labouring in 3rd/4th gear or when steering in dead straight. Any ideas ???? Thanks in advance.

Theres a weird metal flange type thing at the back of the gearbox maybe to stop the propshaft falling down if the UJs go. They can come loose and touch the spinning propshaft. You can knock it back in place with wood and a hammer. Could be that, Doubt it would make a knocking noise. Worth a look.

Have you got under it and checked the proper shaft union joints yet?

I haven't fez, my mechanical knowledge is very limited. Happy to learn though or have a go at things myself if it isn't to big of a job !

Universal joint, Monday morning :doh ha

This might help, disregard the UJs in the ends of the axles as we don't have that system. I dont have sound at work so can't tell if the video is useful.

You can stick 2 screwdrivers in them to get extra leverage to check play.

As you've stipulated "rotational" first thing I'd look at is the UJ's on the propshaft mate, literally get underneath and you'll see the UJ's either end twist the prop back and forward and if they are goosed you'll know about it, you should be able to feel any play

Failing that, check your springs and shocks :thumb2

Got underneath this afternoon can't feel any play in the uj's. Not only that it's failed to start again after having new glow plugs !!!! Battery is drained again and had a good run yesterday to Scotland and back. Not having much with this truck at all :doh

One of these might be useful.

I have one of these in each of my vehicles to monitor what is going on with my battery.
It tells me the charging voltage when I am driving,(Usually around 13.8-14.2 volts) if I switch to auxiliary position on the ignition it tells me the current resting voltage of my battery. ( I am concerned if it falls below 12.2 volts in the summer)
When I switch on the ignition I can see the voltage drop caused by the ignition / glow plug draw. (Typically down to 11.2-11.4 volts on a good battery)

I'm wondering if your battery is duff? You've already tested the alternator.

If you go to Halfords and express interest in a new battery but say you want yours tested first, they will drop test it for you and let you know if it's dudd

Long Shot

If UJ's are okay have you checked the rear wheel bearings for wear.

Have the rear brake drums got loose bits of springs etc rattling around inside ?

I haven't macabethiel ! How do I go about checking bearings and brake drums ? Will I need to jack it up. Thanks

Not so easy on the T2 to check rear wheel bearings due to the limited slip rear diff, yes you have to jack it up and get BOTH rear wheels off the ground, select neutral on the transfer box and spin the rear wheels they should be nice and smooth with no noises but without experience you may find it difficult to tell, partly cos both will go in the same direction but if you go from side to side and listen they should sound/feel the same if one is markedly different then that on could be the problem, Rick

Re battery probs, if you run engine and charge battery then disconnect one terminal then in the morning reconnect, if it starts no problem then something is draining your power overnight, if it does not start easy then your battery has had its day, Rick
