since owning my lastest terrano i have had an annoying knocking sound from the o/s rear.
have looked and wiggled and poked at every bush, bracket and bolt i can see and can't find any loose or damaged parts.
suspect it might be needing new shocks but there is no oil around any of the seals(unless it had lost it all before i bought it)
any suggestions as to what it could be anyone:nenau

anti roll bar bush/bushes would be my first guess. When was the last MOT ?
What makes you think it needs new shocks - Is the handling any stranger than usual ?
Can you describe the knocking any better ? ie. is it like a spoon hitting a coke can, or a hammer hitting a chassis member (then bouncing back and hitting you in the forehead - don't ask how I know this sound)

As above & also exhaust mount

warn u/j

:nenau

hang on.....Briggie? did you have a similar knocking sound?? what was it in the end?

im sure Briggie had this, and it sounded like it was coming from the back at somepoint, ill try find his thread about it....

FROM " BRIGGIE "

my first rattle was the shroud around the knuckle joint on the propshaft , it had worked loose and was rattling on the propshaft ..... its a sort of mud guard around the joint on the propshaft .the mechanic simply placed three dents at regular intervals around the guard using a hammer and punch to stop the guard coming off .... its been perfect ever since

the second rattle noise i had was a stone being thrown up from the rear tyre

the third rattle i had was the sliding part of the roof lining on the sunroof ..... that one drives you bluddie mad , in the end i wedged a metal clip in there lol

I took my sunroof out & replaced it with metal :augie :lol

But lost my escape route :doh :lol

the anti roll bar links where the first thing i checked.went through the mot in july of this year with no advisories on any of the bushes on the rear.
its not a constant knock just now and again,a kind of deep hammer hitting the chasis type of knock.
checked the exhaust and the mountings are all o.k and its not hitting the chassis anywhere i can see.
wheel nuts are all tight.
shocks look a bit battered and quite rusty.just seems a bit bouncy on the rear compared to my old terrano.
got 2"lift springs which are also 20% stronger than the originals so the ride should in theory be a bit firmer.
going to get the back end lifted off the floor on to axle stands this weekend and go through every bush and bolt that i can see.that way with no weight on the suspension parts i should be able to find whats causing it.

check that guard over the propshaft joint ...... your symptoms sound identical to mine

was the same with me mate , i had exactly the same symptoms as you , it was driving me mad , even passersby where looking to see where the noise was coming from .... i had to hide lol

I'd look at ya shock's & defo ya uj's :thumbs

check the jack as well, if its not rolled up tight, its bang and rattle in the rear!also check the spare wheel bracket...

still no closer to solving this annoying knock.had a good poke about under the back of the motor and found a couple of holes in the floor:doh
so i took the rear seats and carpet out and set about with the grinder and welder to repair the floor.
its where the rubber feet of the middle row of seats rest on the floor.so three plates cut and welded in this afternoon.
also checked the seat belt mounting brackets and there is a bit of movement in the strengthening plate under the rear wheel arch so i'm going to weld a couple of new plates around them to beef them up a bit.
had to do the same on my old tdi but that was much worse than this one.
it never rains but it pours:(:(:(

Did you check your UJ's buddy.?

my u j's are aching after all that crawling about:lol:lol

did check them and there is no play or signs of wear that i can see.gave them a greasing but they didn't need it because as soon as i put the grease gun on it was coming out of the joints.sounds like its from o/s rear wheel area when driving.will try again in the morning when iv'e finished the welding:thumbs

did you check that guard over the propshaft joint ? , its sounds exactly like my problem

only gaurd i can see is at the gearbox where the prop goes in and thats tight.
i havn't got any spare shocks to try adz.
just finishing my cuppa and i'm gonna get stuck into finishing the couple of bits of welding then onto finding this knock.
