Hi guys
Nissa terrano 2.7 2004 as above, also feels a bit notchy when reversing up hill or down with lock on.
Looking at the rear diff it looks heavily rusted with big chunks of rust that can be broken off...is this normal?
Any ideas as to problems much appreciated
Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve, the normal culprit for knocking on full lock is the front lock stops that need a dollop of grease on all four of them. Easy job put on full lock and smear grease on one at each side then opposite lock to get the remaining two. Do this anyway as they normally need it.
Rusty rear diff case normally isn't a problem but post a photo to show how bad it is. Has rear diff oil been changed at all. Probably best to do it and use genuine limited slip diff oil. Also check that you're not in 4wd too.

I suspect he has the cheapo Dacia rear diff like mine and not the older cast type diff whic is better, mine was doing the exact same thing si I took a chisel too it then tidied it up and it's OK now

I'm going to say check your rear propshaft universal joints, get under the car and mad handle it each way and feel for play in the spider :thumb2

Cheers, thanks for suggestions, how much oil does rear diff hold please?
Thanks again
Steve

Rear ujs seem fine but front prop a bit worn, noise seems to come from back though?

When you say a bit worn how do you mean? If there is even the slightest play at all in the UJ spider that will cause noise when driving similar to the noise you have described.

Have you had the rear end slip out on the car yet when cornering? If you do drop the rear diff Oil just make sure that you can open the refill plug before you undo the drain plug otherwise you might get into trouble and render the car useless.

If you have the older type cast diff (H233) you'll need 2.8l, however if you have the later Dacia diff (C200) you'll need 1.3l :thumb2

No, back end has not stepped out.
Good advise will check refill plug first.
Knock on full lock definetly coming from back end of truck not front?
Many thanks
Steve

That's good news then because it's scary when it does :O

Does sound like your diff then as long as you're 100% sure those UJ's aren't worn out

Thanks for all the help will be changing oil on Wednesday so fingers crossed it cures the problem.
Steve

Changed diff oil yesterday was like brown and muddy but only very small iron filings on plug.
Big improvement in amount of knocking and noises so well pleased, tempted to change it again in a month or so to help flush it all out.
Thanks again I think you have saved a diff!
