Hi all,
When I turn the engine off on my 2.7tdi terrano the prop shaft at the engine end bangs against the body making a delightful 'doing' noise.

Also when I reverse particularly round a corner I get a creaking noise from the back end.
Any ideas?
Many thanks in advance

Your creaking noise could be the steering lock stops which are actually at the front. There's a download about replacing the plastic caps, use the download to locate all four and blob grease on them instead. Then see if your noise has gone as it can be deceptive. Also make sure you're not in 4wd too, these trucks like to slip the wheels a little so only use 4wd on slippery surfaces.

Thanks for coming back to me so quickly.
If I reverse in a straight line all is fine, if I reverse whilst turning I get creaking and slight juddering. I looked at a few threads and came across possible differential issues that can cause my symptoms.
Checked diff fluid level which is about an inch off, is that enough to cause a problem?
Wrong diff fluid can also be an issue so will change that tomorrow.
My diff has a bolt on cover as you look at it from the rear of the truck which I believe is a C200 which were fitted to later models and are not as hardy as the earlier ones so any input on that would be appreciated.

And definitely coming from the rear! :)

How do you know it is the front prop? more likely exhaust.

Noise from rear when on lock is most likely rear diff oil needs changing, Rick

Thanks again, I'll change the oil and have a closer look at the exhaust.

Make sure it is proper LSD oil, those later diffs can sound like a bearing has gone till the oil is changed, Rick

The exhaust mounting that bolts to the gearbox went on mine and I had the knocking when I switched off the engine like you have described.
I made a new one at work and that solved it:thumb2

That's great, I'll let you know how it goes.

Changed diff oil for proper LSD oil and hey presto all sorted. Thanks.

Waiting for my assistant to help identify the noise on engine turn off so will let you know.

Cheers
