Hi guys.

Got a problem with my Terrano II 99reg 2.7tdi auto.

All of a sudden the other day I couldn't lock the car on the fob. Then I tried the key only to find it wouldnt lock the door either but would unlock it.... Strange. Found out the key was worn out and a bit smooth down one edge.....

Anyway that accounts for the key not working....

I thought, it's a flat battery. So changed the battery's and still nothing. Reprogrammed the fob and still nothing......

But the key that I have that's good works fine but every time I unlock the car it sets the alarm off (well a few feeble attempts at blasting a horn....lol) which is rather annoying at 5am...

Anyone got any ideas.... Can't see it being a fob issue now. Did do a search on here and read a post about the drivers door lock or the central lock unit in drivers door being an issue. But then again I thought can't be same as mine cos I can lock car up n unlock car with good key.

Cheers Gary

They can be a bit temperamental...

From what I understand, they roll through a few different codes, so that if a thief tries to capture the code and re-use it, it wont work. What that means is, if you accidentally press your fob when the car is not in range, it can take up to about 8 (Depends on car/alarm) presses to get it back in sinc again.

This can also happen when you have 2 fobs and use both.

So quite often you have to stand out in the rain pressing the button several times for it to actually un-lock the car. I have not worked out if it is psychological, or if they really do seem to be worse in the rain, but I literately have to be right beside the car on a rainy day for mine to work, yet on a normal day, I can do it from inside the house. (My Volvo V70 was the same)

Another common problem with the Nissan Keys is the actual buttons on the circuit board in the fob stop working, and have to be replaced.

There is a thread on here somewhere about removing the bung over the bonnet alarm switch, which stops the alarm "arming". his then means you can just use the key like in the old fashioned days, with out setting off the alarm every time you open the door. Might be worth doing until you have sorted out the remote issue.

Good Luck

Very strange :S, so it only locks and unlocks at the moment with the spare key but that sets the alarm off?

You've re-programmed the fob and it's still not working?
Did the hazards flash when it successfully programmed?

if the fob is the typre thats built into the key they have a tendency to go pear shaped, the switches on them are very unreliable

we have the same problem locking and unlocking with the key usually, but not always sets the alarm off, only cancels when key inserted in ignition and turned on, thought all Mk 2's were like this, locking on the fob produces no problems, Rick

I have 2 trucks, one with the extra remote and one with it built in.

THEY ARE A PAIN IN THE ARSE......

Use the key.

On a seriouse note, check all the doors as it wont lock if one is not close correctly and some time opening them and closing again sorts it out...

I had another thought on this... the Drivers door switch has 2 sets of contacts, one for the courtesy light, and one that it uses for the lights on and keys in the ignition alarm.

Have a check and see if you get the little red doors open light on the dash when you open each door, plus see that when you open the drivers door with the lights on, or the keys in the ignition you get the beeping... if not, it may be that switch.

I repaired mine, but they are fiddly to work on, and you have to make careful note of the order it came apart in as the contacts are just slight different, so if you are not mechanically minded, it might be easier to source a replacement one.

There is a useful diagnostic mode for the Time Control Unit which will check all of the important switches and sensors that can cause issues with the central locking. Very quick and easy to do and saves a lot of time compared to running around with a test meter.

TCU diagnostics: from workshop manual pages EL-182/EL-183

START
NOTE: Before entering diagnostic mode, make sure the vehicle is fully unlocked, the ignition is switched off and the hazard switch is off.

STEP 1) Press the rear defogger switch exactly 6 times within 10 seconds.
The hazard lamp flash at 3 Hz for 1 second to confirm step 1.

STEP 2) Within 10 seconds after confirmation of step 1, turn the ignition ON, for at least 2 seconds.
The hazard lamp will flash at 3Hz for 1 second to confirm step 2.

STEP 3) Within 10 seconds after confirmation of step 2, turn the ignition off, remove the ignition key and press the rear defogger switch for at least 5 seconds, then release.
The hazard lamp will flash at 3Hz for 1 second to confirm step 3, and diagnostic mode is entered.

You can now proceed to test all of the door switches sensors etc.
There are 15 tests, all successful tests will flash the hazard's once, eg. open drivers door from closed: hazard's will flash once if good.

1) Driver’s door opened from closed (all other doors closed)
2) Passenger or rear door opened from closed (all other doors closed)
3) Driver’s door locked from unlocked
4) Passenger door locked from unlocked
5) Rear doors locked from unlocked (with ultrasonic model)
6) Ultrasonics cancel switch is pressed (with ultrasonic model)
7) Trunk or back door is opened from closed
8) Hood is opened from closed (with ultrasonic model)
9) Hazard switch is pressed from off
10)Turn signal switch is moved to left from off 11) Turn signal switch is moved to right from off
12) Key turned to lock position in door
13) Lighting switch turned 1st position or 2nd position from off
14) Key put in ignition cylinder from out
15) Central unlock switch is pressed

Hi everyone.
Thank s for all the replies.

UPDATE..........I got some new batteries thinking it was that. And reprogrammed the fobs to no avail. What the fix on the links section don't say is that ou need to remove the key from the ignition....lol.. Or should that be DOH. Anyway. Reprogrammed and got the flash that it worked and it did..... Whoooooo

God knows why both fobs stopped working. But only changed batteries in one and reprogrammed both and both now work......

Strange.

Anyway. Many many thanks for all your replies.

Gary

Oh... As a side note. Where is a good place to get a set of injectors for my car from???

???

I tried to re-sync my keys using the link after putting in brand new batteries but couldn't get the fobs to work, when do I need to remove the key from the ignition ? after cycling the key 6 times ?

Hi Terrano
Yes cycle 6 times then take key out and do rest of list.

Once complete you need to wait a while. Think 90 seconds as the car needs to come out of setup mode.....

Hope that helps

Cheers Gary

Thanks for the info Gary :thumb2 I'll get round to trying that again, I had a go today but still can't get them to work, I'll try waiting for 90 seconds once I've finished programming them.
Regards
Scott
