Hi all, I have purchased a second hand key for my Terrano, it's the one with 2 separate buttons (not with the crap rubber cover), it's made by Seimens VDO and has 5 WK4 876/818, 433 mhz, same as the original key, when following the recode info on the very useful tool box area, I can get the car into re program mode but this new key won't re program,I have fitted a new battery...any ideas:nenau

Not sure but I think keys only reprogram 4 or 5 times. Did you use the workshops wk 14? This one worked for me.

Yep, that's the one I used and it works with the original key but not the new (second hand) one.
Any other ideas as to how I can test it

Have you checked its the same type of transponder, think they are colour coded.

Not sure again but I think its in the top of the blade where the key takes apart

Yours will be the red one T7 Ttransponder ( Texas Crypto ID4D-60 ). These are 2002 onwards.

Ok, so I bit the bullet and bought a new key switch from Nissan , which was ordered using my Vin no.
I have re-programmed the new key, using the instructions on here and it now does everything the old key does, (open / close the the doors and turn on the ignition) but it won't start the engine. When I turn the ignition on, it makes the red light on the dashboard flash and just turns the motor over.
The old key does start the engine, but the new one won't
Any ideas:confused::confused:

in side the key fob should be a small transponder which will need taking out of old fob and put in to new fob then it will start on new key hope that helps:thumbs

The problem is, I only had one key with the car, that's why I ordered a new switch unit from Nissan.
When I open the new key, it's identical to the old key and it does every think the old key does, apart from let the engine fire.
I suppose I will have to take the car into Nissan, so they can programme the new key..I don't know what else to try :(:(

I guess that's ok if you have a spare key, what if you don't, does this mean a visit to the main stealers?

There are two elements to these keys.
1) the remote locking/unlocking unit, this is what the workshop guide deals with. So door/alarm all work ok.

2) the other element is a small Cotag type device about the size of a grain of rice buried in the plastic close to the base of the blade of the key. This part on your new key is not matched to the NATS/ECU so engine will not start.

A Nissan dealer visit is probably the easiest way.

A quick and dirty fix:
buy another key, so you now have 3, 1 original and 2 new.
Reprogram the remotes on the two new keys and tape the original key to the NATS antenna behind the ignition switch.
Both new keys will now open/lock doors AND start the engine.

Of course you no longer have NATS protection now, but still need keys that fit.

Well it's done, I forgot about my mate who is a wizz on car electronics, he works on cars all the time and does a lot of work for main dealers.
Any way, he re-programmed the keys and also did a fault on my air bag all for £20, big saving on what the dealers wanted £57+vat just to do the key :thumb2
