So far i've not had a prob with mine but it had covered around 10K when I bought it so it was'nt soaked in oil like a new one. When I fitted one to my old escort I blotted it with paper towel to remove the extra oil:augie

i keep looking at them, just funds stop me

Well I'll say it again Zippy.... 10% improvement in mpg so it pays for itself in about ten tanks of diesel, maybe even less if you drive carefully (I don't!). Plus you never pay for another air filter....EVER! It lasts 1,000,000 miles.

Just be sure to do a careful before and after for Mrs Zip to evaluate and its self-funding...!

hello
whats the benefit of fitting the complete induction kit rather than just changing the filter?
stef

Benefits are as mentioned already, downsides, one is that at low speeds the induction kit can draw a degree more under bonnet air in that maight be desirable, which may mean no real benfits over a panel filter which usually has some ducting to draw air from elsewhere. Problem goes once the vehicle is moving at any reasonable speed and cooler air if forced through the engine bay.

Some induction kits can also cause a considerable increase in induction noise, not sure about the K&N on the T2 though.

I ftted a K&N panel filter at the same time as a PSI powerbox, so I was unable to tell if there was any difference in running etc, as the PSI made such a big difference, however I ran for a week or two with just the powerbox fitted and the wagon was really smoky under load, fitted the K&N in place of the standard and solved the problem.

I assume Jon your first para is meant to read that the induction version can draw in hotter air than the standard airbox which gets its air from the wheel arch/wing area?

Valid point but the temperature difference, unless dead slow, wouldn't be that great and fuel consumption at low speed anyway would be such that its a negligible impact. All I know is a 10% mpg improvement on both trucks I've used it on...

As for noise, if your underbonnet is insulated you'll hear the turbo a little bit and the waste gate dumping but I never found it obtrusive....:)

Interesting it fixed the smoking though....maybe because more air = better burn?

so the waste gate dumps back into the air filter then or where?

so the waste gate dumps back into the air filter then or where?

No remember the turbo is downstream of the filter zippy - but its driven by diverted exhaust gases...no idea whether when you back off the loud pedal they get dumped back into the inlet side, back to the exhaust or somewhere else...wheres Jeremy when you need him?! :)

Wastegate doesn't "dump" anything anywhere, it bypasses exhaust gasses around the turbo impeller in order to limit boost.

Dump valves are something completely different (and also totally pointless on diesels), they "dump" airflow to atmosphere (hence the pshhhh noise, though the better ones actually recirculate the air, but are virtually silent so boy racers on't like them) when the throttle is closed. On a petrol engine there is a physical throttle choke/flap tat will stop the airflow, diesels don't have one. If the airflow is stopped the turbo will stall (ie stop) and when the throttle is reapplied there will be greater lag (ie takes longer to get boost back as the turbo spools up). On a diesel as there is no throttle choke the air just goes into the cylinde as usual, actually helping to maintain turbo turbine speed as the volume of exhaust gases stays high, whereas on a petrol the exhaust gas volume an speed drop off sharply.

As an aside a couple of seasons back M-Sport and Pro-drive on the Focus and Impreza respectively introduced a boost recovery system whereby, any excess pressure was diverted to a large storage tank (in the rear bumper on the focus IIRC), when needed this air could be used to supplement the turbo at times of low boost hence helping to reduce the lag effect.

So when you hear the modest sucking noise as you back off the throttle, is that the waste gate operating? Same thing with the much louder noise you hear on boy racer Scoobys?

yes and no.

Never heard it on T2 so not sure but probably.

The noise on scoobies etc is dump valve venting excess pressure to air, as I say better ones recirculate the air and help maintain pressure but don't make the noise so aren't as impressive to ya maites darn at Maccy D's on a nite doin burnouts - init.

LMAO - yes, the only time I hear/see it iswhen they do their tyre-squealing 'look at me' pullaway from the garage forecourt.....waste of energy then?! :clap:doh
