Hi,
I've just joined this site and tried to become a full member but had an error. I'l try again later.

I have a "52" plate Terrano II 3.0 SE. AUTOMATIC.

It's done 124,000 miles now and I've had virtually no trouble with it at all.
However, I am now having some strange "noises" from the transmission especially when setting off from roundabouts and "T" junctions and turning tight corners. It's difficult to describe but I would say it "judders" or "grumbles" at the back end.

I'm also hearing/feeeling a low "rumble" when driving along long straight roads.

I don't really know whether it's the automatic gearbox or the rear axle but my gut feeling is it's the rear axle.

My local friendly mechanic has said there's not much he can do until something breaks.

So, hopefully I might get some help here when I've subscribed.

I wouldn't waste your tenner to be honest; all it gets you is hours of banter with a bunch of nice but crazy people, assistance every time something goes wrong, plus lots of ways to save garage bills - who needs that??? :lol

But in case you do - welcome!

As for your noises; I had auto box problems which started with a slight shuddering when it dropped into top gear, not when it pulled away - but the diagnosis was the same - wait til it breaks, at least you know what you're looking for then and its cheaper in the long run - 30,000 miles later it finally broke, but for a different reason altogether!

But one thing often suggested here (and I've done it myself to good effect) is to get the rear diff oil changed, making sure its the correct LSD type and grade...but you'll have to pay your tenner to join and search that!

welcome rogerneale, have you changed the rear axle oil? it should be a lsd and oil changes are required or they play up, and the correct oil must be used, i think some of the guy's get theirs from milners, anyway im sure someone will come up with more info soon. :thumb2

I used Comma LSD oil in mine - forget the grade but its on here somewhere....suddenly went all quiet...!

I haven't changed the rear axle oil, it's still the same old stuff that was put in when they built it ;-)

I tend not to do much work on it myself these days, I'm too busy doing other things, but I'll speak to my local mechanic and get him to change it ASAP.

A man after my own heart - take it to the bloody garage! Trouble is, motor trade experience/skill on these trucks is thin on the ground it seems, so its often good to get a diagnosis on here to point the buggers in the right direction!

Changing the LSD oil won't guarantee a result, but its a cheap and easy place to start - just make sure its the right stuff - some garages have been known to chuck any old rubbish oil in there....if needs be, check spec on here and buy it yourself! I have a little mobile man who is really good and does what he's told (except when I'm wrong!).

Also worth - as you'll see from other posts, checking your ride height as torsion bat adjustment to correct any 'nose down' is also cheap and quick to do.

As for the judder; well after having the box rebuilt, guess what, it was still there, albeit slightly less obvious.....so I'm not worrying about it - in fact I just moderated my driving style so that I eased off the gas just as it was about to change up and usually that stopped it happening altogether....its worst when your accelerating hard or driving uphill....ultimately I solved it by giving it to my wife! (The car that is, before the welsh contingent starts!).
