how do you work out where the legal limit it as i can fin anythin on the tyres apart from a horizonal bar accros the tread really low down also found a raised lump that has iii writen on it but looks like its a lot more than 1.6mm
i i get a mm tester where do i test from the indicator or the bottom of the tread ???
Hi Karl, you need to meaure the depth of tread to the bottom of the tread, when the indicators reach the surface they are close to 1.6mm, if they are European approved tyres.
Measure in several places, the tread must me at least 1.6mm across 3/4 of the tyre... But to be honest if you havn't got at least 1.6 mm across the whole tread you need to find out why.
1.6mm is the legal limit, stopping distances will drastically increase with less than 3mm anyway.
So the motoring organisatios suggest changing them at 3mm.
If you are off roading the more the merrier.
I find with less than 3mm you pick up punctures from thorns more often.
3mm on a spare would be ok. In my opinion anyway.
muckypup you would have loved this guy mate he has a 1996 jeeep cherry 4.0
