Had a fantastic week in Jordan with the missus last week, after she'd finished running a conference on the Dead Sea - thought I'd post a few piccies...this is the 2,000 year old Nabatean city of Petra - absolutely amazing place.

Well Jordan is a good place to start Mike. Its not cheap though, and if you want to avoid spending big bucks on tours, you either stay at the Dead Sea, where its easy to do the usual biblical sites (Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Mount Nebo etc..) or stay in the south at Aqaba on the Red Sea, where you can do Petra and Wadi Rum...most of Lawrence of Arabia was filmed in Jordan so that will give you an idea. Petra would have been a $600 day trip if we'd paid for it ( we didn't for reasons I won't go into!) as it was 3 hours each way plus the guide - had we been at Aqaba it would have been much less.

Dorne covers the ME in her job and later in the year we're going to Beirut - I like my roman ruins and am dying to visit Baalket in Lebanon and Palmyra in Syria, and her friend who is the country manager for Lebanon has offered to lend us his Hummer to do so - can't turn that down can I!

Thanks very much - having been here I'd say just go. I was amazed how big the place is - the guide said you need three days really to get round it all, we just did part of it...and english is widely spoken, the current king went through Sandhurst and served in the British Army as an officer for 8-10 years, so they like us!
