The slightly newer Jeep had its first run to France yesterday for the Booze Run driven by "Her Indoors" now I know she can be a bit heavy footed, treats the accelerator as on On/Off switch but I was still impressed that over the 448 mile round trip it returned 29.52 mpg tank full to tank full.

Second bit of good news was that the old (22yrs) SL passed it's MoT with no advisories!

Awesome!!!! That's good MPG with the Jeep and glad the SL hasn't suffered to the tin worm like a good many have before it :thumb2

Mercedes Body Protection.

Luckily the R129 SL model (1989-2002) had very good factory body protection ours is the last body facelift version being a 1998 model.

The previous SL model was the R107 (1971-1989) it not brilliant for corrosion protection but improved during it's long production run.

The earlier model SL was the W113 (1963-1971) versions aka the Pergoda Top were rot boxes as were most vehicles of that era.

Some later model Mercedes did have serious issues. The E Class W210 (1996-2002) model despite having a manufacturers body warranty of 25 years was especially bad. Some C Class models prior to 2003 has issues as they were mostly assembled in South Africa with the body shells being transported from Germany at that time!

You would be surprised how many Mercs are not actually built in Germany today. The brochures use the term "German Engineering or Design" - salesmen seem to be well versed in avoiding the mention of where a particular vehicle is assembled.

viewing WKs with interest as next non Nissan 4x4.

How do you find them for parts and what are they like to work on.
Is my MoT repair shop likely to find onr much trickier than a Terrano
or the green ovals he owns?

Mine is the earlier WK Mk1 my local MoT station & service garage have had no issues, lots of aftermarket spares around who supply the trade plus of course e-bay & Jeep specialists. Only use the dealers when all else fails. I consider the WJ & WK are pretty solid design albeit a tad stone age in some areas. They look after both our Jeeps.

Point of interest I had an MoT advisory on the lower ball joints so had mine done last week, after some discussion with garage agreed that it would be better to replace the lower arms (age) rather than trying to remove the old ball joints that are pressed in place with a retaining circlip. I was charged £603 incl VAT labour & parts to supply & fit both suspension arms, new rear ARB clamp bushes, adjust tracking as required , full flush & coolant change, engine oil & filter (9.5 Litres low SAPS oil).

Eight years ago I would have done it all myself but now I have found a reliable local garage I keep my hands clean at the expense of cleaning out my wallet instead.lol

Others here have Jeeps Lazy-Ferret for one.
