The starter motor on my JCB mini digger has been playing up lately. Before, it may have taken a couple of times trying to start before it engages but today it just stopped all together. When turning the key you can hear the starter engage but it just won’t spin.

I started to remove the starter so that I can test it on the workbench. Unfortunately the heavens opened and I had to abandon my quest.

Not a lot of space under there.

The back end, need to remove a few bits to make some space. You can barely make out the starter motor.

Made access a little bit easier just before the weather closed in.

Removed the starter motor today but no joy whilst bench testing. Ordered a new one today for delivery tomorrow. Once it comes in I will swap solenoids to see if I can locate the problem. Hopefully fix the old one and use that for spares.

New starter motor arrived today but have been going up and down to the vets today. Tomorrow is a new and hopefully better day.

New starter motor did the trick, she burst straight into life. Switched solenoids over and the old starter worked with the new solenoid. Now the search is on for a replacement solenoid so that the old starter motor can be used as a spare.

At least another problem is sorted. :thumb2

Looks easier to replace than a t2. Glad it done the trick

Funny enough, I was about to comment that it looked fairly similar to a T2 starter motor [emoji38]

Wonder how they fare in a size comparison next to each other?

Could this be another interchange part between manufacturers that we've stumbled upon here such as the Vauxhall Vectra MAF's.

I could imagine this information would only benefit Mr TW though as JCB starters would command a higher price tag than an old Nissan

If you are looking for a comparison, the starter motor P/N 714/36700.

Not sure what a T2 starter motor commands but an aftermarket JCB one is anywhere between £60 and £150. Not sure what genuine costs as I didn’t enquire. This one cost me £120 but after I ordered I saw a company selling the same for £60.

Aside from fitment, you need to be looking at power, T2 needs Min 2Kw better is 2.2Kw, many that will fit are only 1.8Kw which will struggle to start a 2.7 Rick
