hi everyone.
I HAD A BIT OF A THINK ABOUT THIS PROBLEM TODAY .
If its cam lobes/followers ect shurely when i reset the tappets it would have adjusted the play out ,and noise would have less pronounced.
or none at all.
had a good drive to work today with radio turned off.
 noticed tapping noise rises with engine speed up to about 2300 rpm. then rpm rises but tapping noise does`nt
its only a single tapping noise so wondered if it could be something else,
fuel pump ect.

The cam lobes should be egg shaped if the lobe wears they go square at the top and the tappets knock as they slap down on the flat surface. when you adjust the tappets you set the tappets to the back of cam the oposite side to the lobe you cannot adjust the tappets to compensate for worn lobes. The best way to check is with a dti gauge if you measure the amount of lift at the end of the push rod you can work out the hieght of the cam lobes they should all be very simular you will probabaly find 1 or 2 are about 3-4mm lower as they have worn lobes

hi tk.
that makes sence the no`s 7..8 tappets were way out when i did them the other month no 8 was .50mm.
did wonder if i bent a pushrod or valve when i took her for a drink down at spitfire crossing when on the notts run .locked up solid .

gonna have to have em out have a shufty easier than newe cam and cheaper

hi jace.
how do you explain the rattle in relation to a bent pushrod/valve.
i am wondering if its worth looking at the rocker arms for flat spots.
rgds.iandouglas

push rods usually designed in as week link to take sting of any valve piston action if youve bent one or two there gonna wobble all over shop maybe giving different rattle to good ones gota be worth checking just incase bent anyway

hi
the rattle is the same weather hot or cold.
its been doing it for a long while just thought loose tappets.
cannot say for sure weather if it did it before i took it for a drink.

Well you have a couple of options.
One being to let it develop and the other is to start pulling it to bits and checking things out, Tks suggestion to check the cam lift is a good idea and fairly easy if you can get your hands on DTI.
You could try running the engine without the rocker cover on to see if its topside.
A long screwdriver to the ear may help locate it.

The reason I asked if it rattled when hot was I wondered if one of the combustion chambers in the head had come loose these normally stop rattling when things expand when the engine warms up

HI JEREMY.
its not any worse than it was when we drove to i.o.w.
just thought then must do tappets.
i have a magnet dial gauge if i set it up on pushrod or simular surface that i can duplicate across all valves .
zero it each time it will read the rise ,so hope this will throw some light on it.
but on the other hand how am i going to get another truck if i keep repairing this one.
if i keep running it i prisume it will swarf up and die but with 175k its problbly the kindest thing to do
i am fed up with all the rattles in the cab and when sheila isnt in its even worse.
you dont think i am daft enough to put that the other way around do you :p :p :p :p :p :p

Ian, if you ever get rid of the old girl (not Sheila) contact Nissan UK they may be interested in taking it back if its a pre production model.

Most owners clubs and manufacturers have pre production models (re built) and they fetch a fortune

i andy.
i am thinking of running her for as long as possible and in meantime looking out for another one around same age ,then use this one as a parts doner ,there is a recon gearbox ,callipers, rad, heater and a few other bits.
bit hard to know what to do realy.
OR go other way and fit another engine.
