I've had the terrano a week now and loving it!!,
But? It has a few features I'm not sure are normal?

1, Whilst turning in forwards or reverse halve or full lock there is a shudder and noise from the rear wheels, the rear wheels can also be seen to jerk slightly? It feels like they are tightening??? then releasing when straightend? :nenau

2, How much noise should the gearbox make? it has a little growl? didn't notice it a first just thought it was part of the engine sound but I have now realised it's from the gearbox, more noticable when exelarating going up hill in 2nd and 3rd? It's sounds like it's comming from the 4x4 knob side? Are 4x4 transmitions a bit more noticable normaly?

This all might be normal? never driven another one so I am not sure?
(just not like my golf tdi?)

I had a mth warranty on it when I bought it a week ago so now is the time to sort out any problems? if they are problems?

First one sounds like you might be in 4wd, which is reserved for slippery conditions only....in the dry it will cause transmission windup which sounds much like you describe. Have you got a green light showing on the dashboard?

Either way, check your handbook for getting out of 4WD. Normally if its been selected, the green light illuminates all the time its on. To revert to 2wd you stop, put in reverse and backup in a straight line for 2-3 metres....the light should go out.

Its worth deliberately selecting 4wd anyway and then 2wd because that might unstick something. Worst case your front hubs might be locked on.

Less likely is that the oil in the rear diff needs changing or is low.....it MUST be the proper LSD oil, not any old garage gunk they dig up (as they often do!). The T2 is known for a bit of wheelspin when pulling away with lock on but yours sounds much more like a 4wd issue to me....but change the LSD oil anyway when you get time, its an easy job needing 2.8 litres of LSD oil at about four squid a litre.....well worth the effort.

ANYONE help with the gearbox, its a 3.0....?

BTW, check with Trading Standards but you'll find you've got six months when purchased from a dealer/trader...:)

I have a simlar motor and mine does the same on the back end. These have LSD(Limited Slip Diff) and causes this. some say it may be the oil needing changing but this is the 2nd i have had and both have done it. obviuosly depends on the road surface as well. Mine squeels grate turning tight into Tescos fuel forecourt.

As for the Gearbox they are noisier so i dont know sorry.

what mileage you got. mine has 62000 on it and the clutch is dodgy but has been since November and 8000 miles ago (but that is another story)

Hope this helps.

Ian

Thanks iansjones, I was hoping this was just a feature?

It's done 55000, Clutch performance is fine but I have a creak at about halve way down and the pedal feels rough/notchy at this point.
Traced the creak to the clutch housing but that's as far as my mechanical skills go?
I thought I had fixed it with a bit of gease on the outside but is seems to have reappeared but from inside now ?

Jay after four T2s and 300,000 miles I have to say that yes the back end has a tendency to spin a bit at low revs in a turn, but what you described up top sounds more like transmission windup to me....if you go to an empty car park and reverse on full lock does it feel like its tightening up and the back end starts skipping? If so, thats defo in 4wd....

Jay if you look at the map Exterme is your closet member if you want to have a chat...

hell make sure your all ok i bet..

That's exactly how it feels!
I have put it in 4wd and it was a lot worse? really had to power it up to get it to turn! but in 2 wheels drive it feels just like a milder version?

Ok in that case I'd definitely get the LSD oil changed in the rear diff....it shouldn't feel like that - I get nothing when reversing, even on lock, and just a bit of wheelspin when pulling away with lock on. When I got this latest truck it was making muffled clonking noises as well in reverse....oil change fixed all of that. As I said, it takes very little time and effort and less than £12 worth of LSD oil, but get the right stuff. I'd be really surprised if you didn't notice a difference, the dealers rarely bother to change it.

wright oil , turn the paper upside down..

must be time for my pills me thinks..

no idea,

but it makes people happy.

thats all im on here for really..

its just like playing with a calculator.. shell ect.

Just checked on the Oft website and you right it's 6 mths? not suprising they didn't tell me that?
Garage is 160 miles away so that takes the pressure off a bit? gives me time to inform them of any issues I can't fix and then take it back for anything expensive?

where did you get it Jay and where are you in wales?

Picked it up from Cheshire! I am based in Caerphilly just north of Cardiff.

It looked good and I picked it up for a reasonable price, compared to other 7 I looked at is was by far the best and I got fed up waiting for a decent one to come up locally that was affordable, so £24 on the train and here I am!!

ideally you need to ask terra or toolbox on the front hub issue. i think the 3 litre version does not have auto hubs. i think they are permanent locked in,
by this it means the front drive shafts are always locked in to the wheels

it is only released from 4wd by the transfer box. but they will tell you more

also grinding could be anything from lsd oil wrong to power steering fluid low or brakes rubbing could be a stiff caliper pin if its been parked up a while

or worn bush on one of the rear axle mounts but unlikely on such low millage

id go with the brakes myself, as a starting point
