Is there terrano still good in bad weather when not in 4wd?

Just wonder what they drive like in bad weather,when in 2wd.

Know landrovers are all time 4wd,just wonder if any safer to have a 4x4 thats on all the time..?

I don't think most landrovers are 4x4 all the time?

2wd in bad snow/ice, Back tries to overtake itself. Fun when you want it to happen but not when you don't expect it. I use 4wd when its all snow/ice. But if it's just patches here and there I stick to 2wd. I wouldn't run 4wd long on any surface where the front and back wheels can't slip.
 
I stayed in 2WD as it was more fun :naughty

Still only use 4WD LOW for off road only
&
4WD HIGH if on sheet ice

Ive never used 4x4 on the road cant see the point if its slippery enough for 2 wheels to skid its slipery enought for 4 so skid.i only use it if i get stuck off road

I don't think there are many 4x4s that are in genuine full time 4WD....the penalties in transmission windup, tyre wear etc.. would be too great. Most tend to give drive to the rear wheels but have a centre diff and sensors that detect when a wheel is losing traction and thence give some of the drive to the front as well.

I used to have a Honda HRV VTEC that was stunning on-road....VTEC engine was a little screamer and it was impossible to slide it....but it had the ground clearance of a gnat.

The only issue with the T2 in 2WD is that with a lot of torque, it can be prone to a twitchy back end if you are over enthusiastic with the loud pedal, but that goes for any RWD car and you soon get to find its limits.

But yer iam really thinking terrano is the way to go.want a work van one as well,and a second cheap one to get muddy but until i win the lottery will just look at one for now!

......or bribe zippy with oil to take me out ,when i did green lane stuff on my dirt bike almost got arrested as i rode into a live shooting rage,the mud was soft and fluffy for some reason so got some nice sideways action! great fun until clutch went and had to push back to a safe spot,mod were not happy!
 
so better than our big rear wheel drive camper!

been driving me up the wall the choice on 4x4,been looking at everything..yet i still come back to these things.

good value,some great tidy ones out there!
 
your bongo also has LSD on the rear so the same set up mas a T2 we have a ford ranger (we did have 2 until recently) wich is as you know the same chassis, engine, and running gear as a bongo. Theoreticaly the bongo and a T2 should behave the same in the mud and snow, in practice they don't!

I would take a t2 where a bongo/ranger would fear to tread, i have backed out of situations in a ranger the t2 will handle with ease!

and as for 2wd in snow, with decen tyres the t2 is far better than most 2wd vehicles in snow, in fact i have driven in failry deep snow and not felt the need for 4x4 at all!

In conclusion if your 4x4 experience is basd on the mazda set up, which is to be fair pretty good, give a t2 a try you will be impressed :thumb2
 
if honest i would take a permanent 4x4 with diff lock over a part time 4x4 any day

t2 is a good motor



have you considered a jeep grand cherry lpg'd up as these can return some good millage for the money if perm 4x4 is wanted, and normally come in cheaper than most

all depends what you are after it for really:thumbs

Obviously if I come to standing water, snow...that's bad or bad ice, I slip it into 4h whilst still moving, then out when still moving all this does is locks all 4 to exactly the same [so this is where I could get wind up] I still have 4L and also diff lock......oh and a spade:lol
 
having tried permanent 4x4 and seectable 4x4 on many different vehicles, part time is the way to go! That's why it is so popular!

In answer to an earlier post i beleive every land rover ever built including freelanders are all permanent 4x4!

dont think i could live with a land rover tho, a land cruiser yes but landies just cost too much to keep them going if you play with them and i like to play lol

so i will stick with part time for the min :thumb2
 
Thanks guys,na i hate landies...did look at land cruiser ,but some saythey go wrong and cost a bomb to fix.

saw a really good cond one 65k old g reg fsh in top cond..

bit of a tank but was 1650.

still i come back to t2!

i agree about repair costs and one of the reasons for that is the permanant 4x4 putting a lot of strain on the drive train and steering, it drags a lot on tarmac, and with the diff not locked it's not much good anyway!

LR's are made in england have a long history both of these facts have added to their 'mystical' prowess, and you can get lots of 'off the shelf' mods, but they aren't the be all and end all of the 4x4 world by anymeans!

I have owned all sorts of 4x4's ovwer the years i've even had 5 Troopers and there isn't anything better than a t2! - different yes, better no! :thumb2
 
I like ther nissan terrano buti think the boot is too small,dont think there is thatworry on a land cruiser!

I see your point, but the swb's compact design still leaves it with a bigger boot than many simmilar 4x4's (shogun for instance) I to a lot of very big trailers and the lenght of a ranger or simmilar makes it impossible to negotiate tight bends when reversing tino small spaces. So size isn't everything :augie

But then if it's boot space you want there is plenty of room in a transit van! and a couple of different 4x4 options too :lol
