Couldn't start my Mav after leaving work tonight shes a 1995 LWB 2.7TD, I turned the key and it made a sort of strained screech noise.

I thought it might be a starter or the Cam belt (Nissan Engine)
Pickup guy came and said it was a cambelt as it was making a hell of a noise.

Just really looking for a 2nd opinion before I scrap her.

Shame as I loved it and it served us so well.
 
Ermmm, don't think it has a cam belt. I'm pretty sure it's gear driven.

If the starter isn't getting enough juice to turn it perhaps you could try the battery leads as they are prone to breaking. Try turning the ignition key very slowly as the switch can wear and cause some pretty strange things to happen. When my clutch went 6 years ago it made some pretty horrible noises as well.

Don't scrap it find out more.

Could be the starter. When mine was on its last legs it was making a screeching noise.

definitely not a cam belt..........it hasn't got one, they are gear driven. have you checked the simple things like oil? hopefully it could be what has already been suggested.

May be just a starter motor problem.

The strained screech could be the starter gear not fully engaging with the flywheel ring gear, due to the bendix gear not throwing fully forward.

Solution = remove starter and check out/lubricate bendix drive.

For information - a bendix drive is a thread-like grooved sleeve on the starter pinion which throws the starter gear forward to engage with the ring gear on the flywheel when the starter switch is turned.

Mmmm Nice one, where is the starter positioned on the engine?
Are they readily available from the scrappies?
Is it an easy job to change?

The wife uses the Mav to ferry the kids about as it's a 7 seater she was caught out a few months ago with it not starting and I told her to shake it which she did and it started no bother, it's not done it since so it looks like it could be pointing to the starter.

Just tried to start it via a booster pack but the noise is still there.

IIRC it's down the O/S of the engine & can be a bit of a pain to replace. I would be temped to give it a little hit with the handle of a hammer as it may help free it up :roll:
 
Best access to the starter is via the offside wheel arch (behind the rubber curtain). It's not too bad a job, a bit fiddly getting the bolts in and out.

New motor from about £90, don't know about used ones.

new starter

there has been some on e bay for around 90 quid new.also try parts gateway for a secondhand one.

This is the easiest access, but sometimes you can't get it out due to brake pipe placement :twisted:

Indeed. I used the wheel arch to get at the nuts, but had to extract and replace the unit via the engine bay. All good fun.

Before you start buying starter motors suggest you check you connections on the starter motor as you might have a corroded connection on the earth or power. If my memory serves me there should be nuts where the leads connect to the starter motor.
This could be the cause of not enough power getting to the starter hence the spindle not connecting properly and only half engaging which leads to the screeching.

Just a long shot.
 
Anyone got a picture of the position of the starter I've had a look and can't find it, there is something that looks like a starter attached to the bulkhead on the offside of the Mav.
 
Just had the offside arch taken off and nothing there, any ideas. It's the Nissan Engine in mine
 
If you look down from the top on the offside, you can't miss it. Large cylinder with a smaller cylinder sitting on top of it. Just about next to the steering link.

Well Guys you will never believe it, After a visit from Neddy who pointed me in the right direction we found the problem.
The earth connecting bolt had worked it's way loose and the Starter motor was hanging down thus breaking the connection to the car.

What a pig of a job to get to and to make matters worse my engine is like the black hole of calcutta. Anyway after a prise with a crow bar and 30 minutes of tightening the bolt the Mav burst into life.

So happy and can't believe it, Thanks to everyone for their advice and help.

Your right Mav, I actually don't use the car my good lady does and it cost me a few hundred a year ago and since then I haven't done a thing to it. It's only used as a workhorse.

But like every other car forum on the net it amazing what you find out and how easy some repairs are.

Spending £10 on this site was a bargin. :lol:

Only problem now is the MOT and Tax are now due so it might end up at Scrappy Heaven yet if it fails misrebly.
