A week or so ago the orange warning came on, engine was running fine. Stop/restarted and the light went out.

Over the next few days this happened a few times, had the car into the garage (with the light on) but no codes when hooked into the computer!

The other day the light came on and the car started chugging bady and blowing out a bluish/whitish smoke. Not good!

Now car idles fine, but up the revs and the chugging and smoke is back.

At first I thought it might be a water issue but it's just occurred to me it's the turbo as everything runs fine until the point in the revs that it's meant to kick in. I've just towed it into the garage, but in the meantime, what the general opinion? Turbo? If so, what am I looking at for a replacement?

Yes, I know, telephone number time!

Fuel filter or if its got one as some TDi's do seem to mini filter. If either filter is partially blocked it won't be able to provide enough fuel at the point where the turbo starts to make boost as the fuel demands go up at that point.

Why would the Turbo cause it to smoke? if it was leaking oil to the engine intake the engine would surely rev it's self to bits.

I will be surpised if it is the turbo.

I dunno, would a blown turbo cause smoke?

I'm maybe just clutching at straws here for what is actually wrong, I just summised the turbo as the car idles fine and chugs when the revs hit the point the turbo should kick in!

Anyone any ideas what the problem might be?

blown turbo

sounds very simular to the problem i have with my tdi.after a lot of dead ends it has turned out to be the fuel injector pump.if the mil on the dash has come on there should be a fault code even if the light has gone off the fault will still be registered in the ecm.have you tryed to read the code as suggested in the downloads section.its really easy and can save you a lot of clutching at straws.might not give you the exact problem but it will put you in the right area so you know where to start looking.

The garage did hook it up to their computer thing but it said no codes were recorded!

I'll check the downloads section and take that into the garage in the morning. Thanks.

When you had your problem did it also beltch out lots of blue/white smoke?

As a side to that, it's been poor at starting for a while, I need to double heat the coils (or whatever you call them) when starting it in the morning, I had planned to sort that problem once it gets cold. Could this be connected?

blown turbo

no problems on starting but if i revved hard it would splutter and smoke at around 2000 rpm, then steady out.if i blipped the throttle at the same revs it would smoke, cut out and not start for about 10 mins.did a full service, checked for the mini filter but not fitted, checked wires, changed sensors but to no avail  all these things lead up to the injecor pump.have got one from parts gateway for 120 quid.just got to get it fitted and set up and hope for the best :| also had the brother in law round and he's found that the oil seal on the turbo is leaking so got that to change too.just don't seem to have the motivation to get on with it at the moment :(

Hiya mate, I would try the mini fuel filter mine was the same. It smoked blue and had no revs and stuff and the engine light came on as well. I took it to a mechanic who cleaned out the filter and it ran great with no problems, he had said it had been small particles stuck to it which would not let the fuel through. He was in Ballycastle and he charged me next to nothing I think £20 to look at it and clean it up. Try that the filter first and then try the expensive route.Hope that helps, Paul

i had similar issues on mine.

once it turned out to be a dodgy earth on the injection pump. the wires connect on the left side of the engine on the intake manifold. they worked loose after a long journey and when i went to restart the next morning the engine use to cut out when i revved it

also, check the egr. everyone told me faulty egr's give you black smoke so when i got white smoke (once the car got to running temp) i discounted the egr. after faffing about with all sorts, i blocked it anyway and it instantly fixed it

Hi chaps, well it's finally sorted. Two days in the garage with a couple of false starts, but we got there.

The problem was bad fuel, pretty common here in NI but as we always buy from reputable dealers figured we'd be safe, sadly not the case.

The dodgy fuel had blocked everything up with a gelatin type substance, thankfully the only casualty was the fuel filter and about 60litres of fuel. The fuel pump, turbo, injectors etc survived.

I'm only glad I was ion the terrano not the Navara when I filled up as I'm sure it'd completely mullered the Navs more delicate engine.

Thanks for the above advice.

blown turbo

have you ever used svo in it as iv'e been told that it could have led to the death of my injector pump. i used it a couple of times but only a 20%mix with derv but dont know what the previous owner had done with it.will never use it again, dont care what any one says.

p.s glad to hear youv'e sorted yours out

SVO is mixing new veggie oil with diesel, can be mixed at different ratio's.

Nah, just bio every other fill or so. And I've already been thru the changing filters stage.

Proper diesel from now on, sod the extra cost!

I've bought JonathanM's powerbox off him so that should hopefully be fitted for next weekend when we have a long run scheduled so be interesting to see what effect that has on performance.
