I bought it on ebay, I flew up to Glasgow and drove back. I very different car to my beloved Y60, better in some ways and worse in others. The man who sold it kept saying 'such a simple car' - I was thinking 'simple? bloody hell, you should have seen the Y60! All you get is an engine and something to sit on' lol. I loved that car

Anyway, onwards and upwards. It's a lovely car, fast as a fast thing - except when it's cold, and the turbo lag is a bit worrying. I like the automatic heater setting, and I think it may be less fond of diesel than the Y60 was.
A stone hit the windscreen on the M6, it's cracked the screen, I only had the car two hours or so! I think I'll call her Jynx. Let's hope the pistons don't let go.

Yes, 452 miles from Glasgow to here, to be precise, and it behaved beautifully. It only took 7 and 3/4 hours, a smidge over a full tank, and three cans of Red Bull. I left here at 11.30am, took the bus, tram, train to Gatwick, plane to Glasgow, taxi to car, and drove back. Got back at 12.30am.

I've been driving it round here a bit (built up area, lots of stops and starts) it is a very different car from the Y60. At roundabouts you go to pull out and nothing happens, then suddenly it lurches forward as the turbo cuts in. I was used to the Y60's stately progress, you put your foot down and it proceeded, in a slow and deliberate manner, not at all perturbed by anything. I always felt that even if the world ended, out of the flames and smoke would come the Y60, still rolling along. The Y61 feels quite impetuous and flighty by comparison, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Bought some more oils today from Opie - hope it's not the kiss of death lol (Rick changed the oils in the Y60 and it was stolen two days later). We'll see from the state of the old oil if the head gasket is ok. I had to put over a litre of water in today, hope it's a one off and not anything horrible.

i think itll have "nats" so harder to steal,keep check on water,dont dilute your antifreeze to much though!

sounds silly, but consider one of those steering wheel locks, cheap but a decent deterrent - might slow them down a bit anyway :thumb2

Bought new antifreeze today, it'll be going in at the weekend (changing water completely and all new antifreeze).

Yes, it's got NATS - deadlocking, immobiliser and alarm. A 'crooklock'? That's not a bad idea. I am thinking of getting a tracker fitted - need to see how much they are, and for the surveillance back up. I need to draw my horns in for a bit, my bank balance has taken a severe beating lately :-(

Tracker not really worth the effort for a decent one, IMHO.

Steering wheel lock? Disklok all the way. Do not consider anything else.

Visible deterrents are the way. Nothing will stop 'em if they want it, but making it look like a pain to nick means they will go for an easier target. Sad but true.

I'd say disklock too, as the bar type ones are actually a big help to mr robber:augie

I'd only put on what the insurance company want though

It's good idea replacing the anti freeze/coolant, get a bit extra of the same brand and keep it for top ups :thumb2

5 speed manual. It's a joy to drive, although it needs a service and had a hissy fit yesterday and wouldn't start (blocked fuel filter). I'm sure there will be a few more issues, the teething problems you get with a second hand car.

I notice that when you go up a steep hill you have to keep it in second for a long time. I wouldn't normally rev a car that hard before changing gear, but if I change to third the revs die and it won't pick up. I think it's just different ratios/torque output from the old car (4.2 straight six normally aspirated - had longer legs than this car).

yeah, they just arent that powerful, I have to do pretty much the same thing. I can go into third up a steep hill, but it will slow down a lot. Often wondered if a good service and tune up will help, so thats next on my list...

think with a turbo you do need to work it a bit more, though the zd will amble
round and into a t junction in third that would have seen the t2 going down to 2nd.

it also pulls the caravan out of roundabouts in third at relatively low revs far better
than the 2.7tdi.
