Hi My T31 automatic cuts out when I reverse when engine cold As soon as I engage reverse the revs drop and it cuts outbIf I keep revs up by using two feet it’s fine I have no other problems plus when I’ve driven it for 10 mins I can then reverse without problems Been in two garages and they couldn’t find the problem Taken to Nissan £50 later they said been on diagnostic machine no errors showing I’m taking it in for a software update next week but it’s for a known problem of problems from 1st to 2nd and vice versa on hills Though I’ve no problem with this on my car !! Just wonder if anyone has had any experience of this problem and if so what was it caused by

Had this on a Terrano once and turned out to be the MAF :nenau
Might not be your issue but a good place to start :thumb2

What sort of mileage has the vehicle covered ?

This might sound daft but does it make any difference if you select D first leave it there for 5-10 seconds then select R ?

It sounds like it is anti-stall idle speed related so not getting the enrichment when cold as the load increases as you select the reverse gear.

Thank you

Yes it’s ok if I have it just running disengaged for 10 mins Or if I don’t have to reverse off drive If I drive for 10 mins it’s fine on reverse However it occasionally cuts out as I pass the lever through R to drive if I don’t move it quick enough through It’s really bugging me I can live with it but would if possible find out what causes it Nissan useless they’ve said not heard of it before Willing to keep looking but I don’t think I should pay for their training lol

Try this and see if it still stalls when you go into R

Have you tried selecting "D" first from cold don't move forward just let it build up the pressure in the torque convertor then try going into reverse ?

On Mercs when the Torque Converter faults they cause odd low speed engine tremors & when seriously worn some gear shift clonks.

Some autos will allow you to select neutral before starting the engine. You wouldn't have to go through reverse to get to drive and it will rule out reverse having something to do with it cutting out. :nenau

Good point, worth a try.

Thanks all Had into Nissan they no idea never heard of it before done a software update for auto gearbox but didn’t solve problem I’ll see what your tips do thanks

Try getting some tolerances for your MAF from a workshop manual and measure yourself with a multimeter, nice afree test there mate :nenau

I think all autos will do that as long as you keep your foot on the brake pedal with the ignition on before you try to start the engine.
