Ok so the maf has sorted the overfuelling/ cold starting issue, but it still looses all power intermittently. It wont rev above 2k, but ignition off/on then its fine again.

I cant see as this would be pump as pump tends to be a constant problem

what about fuel shut off solinoid ?

or throttle peddle potentiometer, again i think this would just break down so would be constant :nenau

its got a dogy ignition switch, but that would just turn it off, not cause loss of power ...

Does the ecu do much on these ?

It sounds as though the ECU may be dropping to it's safe map or limp mode, characterised by resetting the ECU with ign. off/on sequence.

This can be caused by an out of range sensor value, which can be as simple as fractured wire or a loose/dirty connection, although it can be a pain to find.
As a background task the ECU range checks the majority of sensor values to determine that they are within range and if any are found implausible will drop to a safe map, or sod all power.

Have you checked for any fault (DTC's) codes stored? As this may give a clue as to what it's bitching about.

not found anyone that can read consult 2 yet

I might try a specialist diagnostic place I know , I just hate to admit defeat and have to go to a bloody garage

Consult is straightforward to do with PC ECUtalk and an simple interface, however the flashing MIL light method works ok for simple stored codes.
You should get code 55 if there are no faults logged, any other code code will be a stored DTC.

What, consult 2 ?

No one can read it round here, it's an obd2 plug but nonstandard pins, ecu talk won't read it, did you miss my thread about consult 2 ?

Consult 2 was found on some nissans 2001-2004 before they went to obd2 standard

No I had not seen your "Consult 2" post, but I have now......
It will work, you just have to rewire 4 connections from the 14 pin interface adaptor to a 16 pin JS1692 plug or stuff the wires into the 16 pin socket with matchsticks!
The 16 pin connector uses pins 12 (SCTX) 13 (SCRX) 5 (GND). & Pin 8 +12V
The 14 Pin connector uses pins 1 (SCRX) 2 (SCTX) 14 (GND) & Pin 7 +12V
Ignore the Clock connection, it's not needed and probably not even got a pin there!
Consult I / Consult II, the communication protocol is compatible.

Your 16 pin connector should look like this:

Looks bloody familiar, i tried making an adaptor for mine ages ago, couldnt get it working, may have been a dodgy consult adaptor though, Think i might have another go.

Here's your connector, shown are the 4 connections needed (in red), I have also shown in blue the "check" connection for flashing MIL lamp diags.
So, pin 12 on the 16 pin connector goes to pin 2 on the 14 pin connector etc...
EDIT, sorry just noticed, pins 12 and 13 are swapped, looking at it upside down!
For reference: Pin 9 is next to pin 1 and pin 16 is next to pin 8.

Almost any of the 14 Pin "Nissan Consult" interface units should work, there really is not much in them, they only level shift the 0V~12V RX and TX signals from the ECU into -5v~+5v so they are suitable for connecting to an RS232 interface on your computer.
I built my own so cant really say who sells a the better product, but Makeitfit and Geoffdown have both bought units from ebay that worked ok, in fact Geoff had the 16 pin connector issue as well!
If your curious PM me with an email address and I'll send you the circuit diagram of the interface unit.
As for will it work, well it worked on mine and it's a 2002 3.0 ZD...

So would this be ok :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nissan-Co...iagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item2ec08c2c25

then use the ecutalk software ?

How would you suggest making the pin connections ? should i make up some extension cables with terminals ? seems fiddly ? or is there an easier way ?

Thanks

Something like this should be ok:
Just bear in mind that most if not all of the software they ship with these things is aimed at petrol engined vehicles, that's where ecutalk differs.

For connections, just open up the unit and solder a chunk of 4 way alarm cable or similar to the pins inside the 14 pin connector. Then either beg borrow steal a 16 pin connector for the other end or as I mentioned just stuff the wires in the socket, messy but it works.

I have a galleto 1250 clone knocking about ( I used this to remap/flash my old hdi pug van) i spose i could nick the plug off this ?

I found a grey 14pin socket in a micra in the scrappers, had the correct pins wired too.
