Hi Guys,

Could you tell me if it would be viable to put an intercooler from a T2 TDI
onto my Mistral,
The diesel price is killing me (21mpg). Have put 2x hyclones on but they dont seem to be making a differance in mpg,
Would an intercooler be the answer ?.

Had a word with a mistral owner as we were filling up and he said he was getting 28mpg with his ,he has a mod in the air pipe (somewhere) that reduces the diameter and compreses the air into the cylinder.
Anyone heard of this !,

Told him about the Club ,maybe he will join and we can find out more !.

Hi bibio.
It's no consolation to you I know, but the diesel price is strangling us all :( Wonder if a general election would make any difference
Do you do a lot of urban driving ? Did you ask the other Mistral driver what sort of driving he does ? Could be a big factor in accounting for the difference.
Urban driving seems to me to be the worst offender. I do a fair bit on country lanes and that is thirsty work too--- forever braking then accelerating and so on. Daren't tell what I spend on diesel--the other half might read this.
Haven't heard of the intake reduction pipe device you mentioned. Would be interesting to know what that is about

PS. An intercooler would certainly be an improvement but ,for my money I would go for a front mounted type. You might have read my post--intercooler fan-- that would explain why.

I looked at a front mouted intercooler, but I would probably have to take
off my aircon radiator .which I would like to keep .

I suppose if an intercooler gives more power, then more power might mean less time on full throttle, and maybe less fuel consumption. But equally more power means greater chance of using the power, and that wouldn't lead to better economy.

I can't see what your man was meaning by a device that reduces the diameter of the air intake hosing to "compress" the air, anything that narrows the diameter will restrict the air flow - don't forget F1 & other motorsports have used intake restrictors in various forms to cap power.

Have a look at some of the other threads and see if you feel as though there is anything more that you can do to the car as standard to improve economy before looking at add ons.

Blinking eck 21mpg?!?! Surely there is something wrong with the OPs Terrano??

Like JonathonM, i have a 2001 Sport SWB and its doing a happy 30mpg on average- driven not in a granny manner.

Went to leicester yesterday with trailer 220 miles round trip on less than half a tank.

I have just done a mixed run to Doncaster and Back.
Motorways 70ish and back road and running round town

i did the MPG the proper way tank brim to tank brim and it worked out at 31mpg.

MPG the proper way

ok, so what is the proper way..

Hey All,

I eargerly wait to stand corrected, But to my knowledge an intercooler cools down the air that has left the turbo which makes it denser, This means you get more air into your engine, More air = more oxgen to ingnite = bigger bang and more power! But i think i am right in saying that as you now have more air entering the chamber you need to add more fuel by winding the pump up a bit, Which obviously would mean your fuel consumption would be worse than now?

Hopefully someone will prove me wrong because i have a luvly great big front mount here that was left over from my last project that i'd love to stick on the patrol

intercooler

You are correct in most of what you say - with a lower charge temp comes with it higher density of oxygen, so more fuel can be made use of, so you could, and often do wind the pump up.

However the engine is running more efficiently and you are often able to use a higher gear for longer or get into it sooner and use the extra torque. This is where the fuel saving comes from.

Tim..
