ok so im also thinking now of tweeking the intercooler but.....


i plan to leave it almost where it is just lift it a few inches and modify the bonnet, and new scoop.

it will all stay in place then the bonnet opens so big hole on bonnet....

now here is the question...

my options are :

i can make a scoop that will heat sheild it from the engine heat. and either

1 direct the wind under the intercooler and out the top to get max air flow through it

2. put the intercooler into a similar scoop as option 1 but spray it with water on a small pump
so its wet and windy

3 i can put the intercooler into a a sealed tank of water so its submerged . as water disperses heat quicker than air


4 use a 300zx type intercooler. twin turbo . now this one has 2 inlets and outlets
i could run air through one and cold water through the other . creating condensation :clapbetween the 2 . and cooling effect. could even put this int option 1 for big wind and heat sheild

your thoughts please
 
I think if you're thinking of that much work, why not go front mount? That way you can get a good size one in and keep the plumbing simple:sly
Then with the space left on top you could supercharge the bugger :naughty
 
Your thoughts are wasted on 4x4's & you should do track days :lol

Ya just not producing the power or getting the speed to benefit plus you might actually loose power.! :doh

Just copy & or modify what Pete's done is my advice :thumbs
 
Don't go too big with the IC or you will create a large air mass that the turbo has to compress before the air gets out the other end; aka turbo lag...low volume and well cooled it the best way.
Water cooling is great, but if submerged, you now have a mass of water to cool down, still do-able though.. my 10 cents worth.

front mount will be loads of hose. and big air volume.... i could work it out but i guess it would increase the air volume by 4x minimum
your looking at around 1.5 meters of 60mm hose . thats a lot of air . and lag

im thinking of 6 inches of extra hose max
 
For those that haven't seen it, here's what I did with mine

I guess a bigger fan and IC combo would help at low speeds. Not sure how big is too big though:sly
 
also if these things are 2.7 litres

that means on every full cycle they suck in 2.7 litres of air. i guess

now at 2500 rpm thats 6750 litres of air every min

and more 10800 litres at 4000 rpm

so i cant see a fan doing much to cool that much air going through that quick

those that have tried extreme air will know

i agree with adz, you could lose power, if the intercooler is big, it does'nt mean you will get more hp, you could end up with less, big cooler + big turbo+ headwork, yes may be ok, :thumbs:naughty

im not thinking bigger cooler . same one just better air flow , or submerge it .

ir use one flow off a 300 zx intercooler. now thats of a 3 litre v6 so one core is enough for 1.5 litre .

but one thing is for sure , any intercooler will have less volume than 1.5 metres of 60mm hose to front mount
 
BUT the fan is for LOW speed work, that's the point. As you haven't got the air flow at low speeds to cool any air through the I/C :eek:
At speed there's plenty of cooling going on.
The water helps even more at LOW speeds to cool in warm/high ambient temps.:)
Most of the time on the road you'll be at 2500 RPM and plenty of air cooling going on.
Off road you're up and down the revs but often traveling slowly, hence the reason for the fan/water spray I've done:D
It's switchable and will be on a thermostat too when I remember to fit it:doh

Divide by 2 cos a full cycle of 4 cylinders is 2 full revolutions - 4 stroke cycle remember, 2 ups, 2 downs.

But the maths is kinda flawed anyway as it all depends on boost pressure. Its not the volume of air that matters its the mass of air.

But intercoolers and fans etc do work.Big intercooler volumes aren't as much of a problem on diesels as petrols either as they never close the throttle so don't need a BOV (Dump valve) so don't loose pressure and turbo revs i te same way.

Just wish I had time to do mine - navara's and pathies ave front mounted coolers by the way was looking at one in body shop the other day wondering if I could make one work. I'd much rather keep it all nissan, really doesn't matter but its kinda nice if you can pull it off.

yeah i can see that. but...... i still recon there is room to cool it more with more efficient scoop system
 
im thinking of fitting a headlamp washer jet to my escort intercooler, to help keep it cool, cant really get a fan in front though. :cool
 
Agreed, so maybe if you lift it and heat shield the underside, as you said before, then work out a good exit for the air flow:augie

You can get proper spray nozzles on the bay. They're better than a jet from a washer type squirter thing:D
So you'll get a spread of water over the I/C . Scoobies do it:cool:(That's where I got my I/C water spray switch from):naughty

i must have a look later, i've got a few washer tanks with pumps on, so may be able to fit one somewhere and use a proper spray nozzle, :thumb2:naughty
