i posted the same thing on Facebook, but i'm also wanting to know what you all think

insurance, not the nicest word in the world lo:eek:l, i don't think i'll be able to insure my truck when i pass my test, not to long until i'm 17 :D, been thinking of getting a very cheap car to build up some no claims, was thinking of seeing how much it would be to put a new gearbox in mums Honda jazz that's dead on our drive:eek:, but wouldn't be worth it for me:(, i'm not wanting another car but i can't insure my Terrano at the moment lol, does anyone recommend any cheap cars?

i don't want any french cars or corsa's, they are everywhere, would like a nova, but it's hard finding one cheap or that hasn't been modified, i was thinking about a wee daihatsu hijet van lol

also, could this work, if i was on my dads insurance on my truck as a named driver, but also have me own insurance on a cheap car to build my no claims?

cars i'm looking at are nissan, rover daihatsu, perodura, fiat and so on, id like a proton, but some poo came out when i seen the high insurance group!!

which brings me on to groups, my terrano is 23, a maverick is 19:doh id be looking at vehicles under group 7, i'm not wanting a expensive car, under £275 if possible,

also, im not buying now, will probably be after Christmas when i hopefully have past my test 'fingers crossed' and hopefully have money as i keep spending it on my beloved T2:naughty

if anyone's got car ideas or just general help let me know:)

Try getting a few quotes on the T2 first: Adrian Flux, Frank Pickles, Academy Insurance etc. The cars you mention: saxo, corsa, etc. Are probably going to cost more to insure! Don't get hung up on the groups it doesn't mean much just get some quotes :thumb2

yeah, been looking at quotes, im not fussed what image i get with the car lol, found that the daihatsu grand move quite cheap because no one wants them:doh insurance group is low, i just want a practical vehicle:D

im going to do more research on insurance for the T2

what are your plans after school? if uni or whatever maybe best to wait to drive after that?

basicly anything is expensive and can only really be justified if you need the vehicle if your working.

have you got any quotes on these low insurance group vehicles??

im out of school, i'm not going to uni or anything like that, im in the process of building a photography business
i'll need a decent sized vehicle to get my cameras and things in

You will find it cheaper to insure yourself as a Learner on a small car but it will go up when you pass your Test. as you are no longer under control of a full Licence holder. some companys want you to drive around with a black box :eek:avoid as it will cost you in the end. no not yet, im just looking at the groups, if i find a vehicle in a low group that i like, then i'll see about getting a quote,

use like confused.com to get the idea on prices. I'd personally just look at quotes before you focus too much on groups.

Point about groups is that they are guidelines for average insurance comparisons, not all insurers use the same ones and specialist insurance (4x4) can often work out less. Cheap, worn out low group cars can often attract a higher premium as the statistics will say that you are more likely to have a serious accident in them.

Start off getting a few quotes and include a good few extra drivers on the policy who have good low risk as the combined average risk will go down. Have a look at the moneysavingexpert website on car insurance and what to do. Don't get your dad to insure it and then you drive as a named driver, it's called fronting and you'll find your insurance null and void. Not sure how that'll be if you also have a car in your own name though, but they are hot on it.

If you just want to get a no claims policy, get a quote on the Jazz with really restricted mileage - it's not like it's going anywhere! A years no claims is exactly that, one year of insurance with no claim on the policy, not one year of safe driving.

When's your test going to be? if you can hold off for a year, insure the cheapest thing you can as a learner and get one year out of the way, being an additional driver on the T2 as a learner will be a lot less as you'll always have to have an experienced driver with you.

Strangely enough, even in today's land of instant quotes online, a broker who you can chat to might be able to work out what will be best for you.

Good luck with the photography business BTW, remember to include business use on your insurance too! Indeed, as you'll need the car for business, you might find it worth a chat over with an accountant too as it may be worth the expense of company car tax to then right off against personal tax your insurance/repair costs.

i just tried quotes with a few company, they refuse to insure me on me terrano:(

thanks for that mate, i turn 17 this November and hope to start the learning/test stuff asap after birthday

When you say you tried a few companies, did you try the ones Fez mentioned, like Adrian Flux and the likes? Also remember to add in extra old farts to bring down the cost some. :D

Dunno if any of them will do it, but you can try and ask for a trader policy - it'll cover you for anything, oddly this can work out cheaper!

i tried AXA and go compare

What sort of price is coming up for a nasty cheap box on wheels? I think you're going to need a friendly broker to get this working for you, 17 yr old insurance is a minefield!

Remember to get quotes for fully comp as well as TPFT, as it means you're more concerned about the car and therefore more likely to look after/drive nice - the prices can be less for fully comp.

Also, find the cheapest 'classic' car (in insurance terms) as again it's specialist and therefore may well be cheaper.

aviva says:

Nissan TERRANO II TD SLX (L512NEO)
£8,474.00 per year
:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Didn't quite 'quote you happy' then? I think you'll find most vehicles are going to be in the four figure area, but hopefully you can sort out something that starts with a one rather than anything higher.

Give a broker a call, probably find out you'll get insurance and it'll be underwritten by Aviva anyway! My mate works for them and rarely do any of the employees even insure with them as they're quite choosey about who'll they'll give a good quote to direct.

Still, think of the discount you'll get if they do a 20% off deal!! :D

fone up academy insurance n mind tell them your a member on here as they give you extra discount AND insurance cover for when your off roading (with a club)

cheers, i'm going to come back to insurance later as my head is spinning:lol:lol:doh it doesn't look like its gonna be easy:rolleyes:
