Instrument cluster repair?

Hi,
I've just picked up my new (2001) terrano. I knew it had the usual mileage LCD problem but on the way home I noticed the speedo was faulty too, sticking and not reading correct speed etc. :doh
I read on here that the LCD could be dry solder joints but has anyone tackled the speedo fault before? If so, was it an easy fix?

Or has anyone tried anywhere else? How much should I expect to pay to get it repaired? It says from £40+vat but knowing companies I bet that's just for changing a bulb :lol

I have a similar problem with my T2, drove it to work yesterday morning, everything working fine... Got in it drive home at 6pm and all the gauges have stopped working i.e. speedo, tacho, Fuel and temp gauges. All the warning lights are working, including the LCD panel, but odometer not working?

I have had this happen before, and my odometer often turns the nought at the front of the mileage into a 7, which make the car appear to have covered 777000 miles (not even a Terrano can do this)! The last time I pulled all the fuses and cleaned them, as well as trying to remove the instrument binnacle, which I couldn't seem to get off.

Reading some historic threads on the subject, there do seem to be some cases where disconnecting the power supply for a couple of hours has had a positive effect. I will try this tonight.

Have you removed the panel yet? If so, how did you get it off?

You may want to give the self diagnostics for the instrument cluster a go:

Combination Meter Self-Diagnosis
PERFORMING SELF-DIAGNOSIS MODE
1. Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position.
2. Press both reset buttons on the combination meter and keep
them depressed.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position, while keeping the
reset buttons pressed.
4. Release both reset buttons then self-diagnosis will start. The
sequence (A to I) is activated by press the either reset buttons.
NOTE:
If either reset button is not pressed for 20 seconds at each step or
if the ignition switch is turned OFF, the self-diagnosis mode is
exited.

It's only got one reset button that twists for time I presume and pushes for trip reset.

Mine is like that.

I pulled all of the fuses yesterday evening, and checked the ignition afterwards at which point everything worked again.

I guess the big 20amp fuses are the main fuses?

This could be bad contact between the gauge pins, and the spring-clip terminals on the PCB.

Gauge pins... (I applied a film of electrolytic grease on the pins when I rebuilt the pod following the LCD panel repair)

Spring-clip terminals on the printed circuit board...

I've sorted the issues out now :thumb2. The LCD display was dry solder joints and I put a bit of copper grease (that's all I had) onto the contacts for the gauges. All is good. Well apart from the speedo not being that accurate :doh its under reading so maybe an excuse to buy some bigger wheels :nenau?

Glad you've managed to sort it mate, i was going to suggest new clocks from a scrapper and get the milage corrected but that may have worked out dearer given the age of your motor

Remover the lower dash panel under the steering wheel, this allows access to two screws for upper dash panel. Then three screws above instrument cluster releases top panel, remove connectors to switches on top panel. Then four screws can be seen for cluster. Remove these and undo connectors.
