hi all my indicators keeps blowing fuses. but just before this happen when signalling we hear a beep . so I think it has something to do with the towing's 2 sockets wiring . so I have had a look and there seem to be a relay with a earth clamp just hanging there wrapped up in a bag connected to the wire's. but the earth clamp has poked threw . can anyone tell me what it is for and should it be earthed as I think when it touch's the metal underneath it is causing a short .

Depends on what was fitted, but normally a beeper goes when a trailer is connected to show the trailer bulb is working.
This works by seeing a slightly higher current than normal, and starts the beep when this current is exceeded.
The probable reason is the short is overloading the indicator circuit, enough to give the first bleep, and then too much current flows that then blows the fuse.

To me, it is clear that the fault lies with the trailer socket wiring, I can only assume that the relay should only be activated when indicating, but if this was the case, I would expect two relays.
What you need to do is reverse engineer it, ie note down what is connected to what.

Is the relay in a bag hanging down from the socket? if so...what a bodge..

If you don't need the trailer socket, but need working indicators, then possibly time to write up what you have, for later, and start disconnecting wires, and insulate them from the car.

this is the other side. I have attached the wire because the earth clamp has broke . it has something to do with one of the tow bar sockets

I think its a flasher unit . I have ripped it all out and found half the wires showing bare wire . so I have cut them all off and using blocks to join them back up as solder won't take hold . then I will put it back

Do not think the metal bracket is an earth clamp more like just a mounting bracket, there are only three connections 30, 86 and 87a 31 is not connected, so whatever comes in on 30 goes through to 87a unless the opposite pole to 30 is applied to 86, hope that makes sense, I cannot see it being a flasher unit, Rick

This is normal schematic for standard relays.

Thank's Rustic, is there a particular assignment for the numbers on the relay? I seem to recall that they are on trailer plugs and sockets, if so this may give a clue as to what this relay is for, Rick

Fog light?

Hi, is it possible that it is a relay to switch off the tow vehicle fog lights if a trailer is connected. The idea behind this is to reduce fog light glare off a towed trailer if fog lights are switched on.

The latest towing sockets have an extra connection.

Michael.

the wire's coming out of the connector block are red, yellow, black and a brown if this helps

have you looked at the electrical diagram in the workshop manual ?

I think your right as it is connected to the orange wire on the loom be hide the rear left bottom light cluster with the red . then goes to the relay then the yellow comes out of the relay and goes to the other connecting block and a brown which is earth and a red/yellow wire that I think goes to the trailer socket

Joke about indicators.

On the subject of indicators, I couldn't resist this joke lol..

Why was the steering column uncomfortable ?

The indicator was stalking him...

I really have to get out more....
I'll get my coat...:augie

Glad to help !

Nice to be able to offer some constructive comment for a change.

Makes a change from just asking for help.
