I guess the biggest obstacle would be the simple fact that you can't really dismantle the mirrors without risking damaging them.

It can be done but it depends on how much work your willing to do:augieI fitted 4 small round clear indecator lights into the mirrors on my mk4 escort but you have to remove the class 1st & as you know there is a high chance of it breaking

Plastic cover costs £85 not painted so will leave well alone.

you can get the stick on ultra thin LED type then just run the cable through if you really want to do it.
