1) My front offside indicator lens has a hole in it. About the size of a petit pois (not as big as an uncouth garden pea). Would this be an MOT failure?

2) Secondly, the knob that changes where the hot air from the heater goes (i.e. face, windscreen, feet - let's call it climate control :) ) has borked. On switching it to the windscreen there was some kind on 'thunk' and know it would turn back. It only goes about 90 degs anticlockwise. It has the feel of trying too hard would break something proper. I guess one of the Heath Robinson cables that (I assume) push the flaps within the dash has slipped or something has got jammed in a flap. Is this a known issue? How much of a PITA is it to remove bits of the surround etc to have a butchers and fix?

Sorry, can't answer number one, but for number 2, I take it, as yours is the 2002, T2, it has the rotary knob controls, rather than the sliders of the earlier ones.

Basically, there is a spring metal clip that holds the end of the outer cable in place, this clips over a bit of plastic, which can snap. On's suz's car, I removed the controls, and used a hot screw driver to melt cable tie sized slots either side of the metal clip, and then used the cable ties to hold the clip back in place, which fixed the problem.

To remove it, is a bit daunting, and it does require removing a lot of the dash, but apart from being quite a time consuming job, and ending up with a lot of screws, and plastic bits, it is not exactly difficult. You need to remove the plastic trim round the gear sticks, the centre dash, glove box, the apron under the steering wheel, and the dash info centre cover. That then allows you access to the screws that remove the area of dash that the centre section fixes to. You can then remove the heater controls. The cables don't give you much room to manoeuvrer it until you have undone them, but it is doable...

If your lens is yellow then yes it will fail, but if clear with a yellow bulb it will be fine, Rick

Stick on lenz bits

On my old r3mR as rear light were crazy money I bought a rear lamp repair kit. It consisted of a strip of Amber & Red that you cut to size and stuck on after revealing the self adhesive strip. As Belt & Braces I used a silvered rear bulb that shone yellow theyare not painted on the outside as the coating is on the inside. The rear lamps were a lovely mustard colour. I have used similar bulbs on my BMW.

Like these but cheaper.

My lenses are clear with amber bulbs. So fingers crossed there.

For the heater I have the circular knob not the sliders. Sounds a bit of a swine to sort. Thanks for the advice though.

Zombie thread, back from the dead. Having driven to Luton and back without the ability to have cool air, it is time for something to be done.

Anyhoo, am slowly taking bits of the dash out as I head for the heater controls but am now stumped by the 'walnut' trim around the radio. I have it loose at the bottom but not at the top around the radio. Reading other posts here I believe you pop the back plastic around the radio (which also holds the hazard switch), find some screws and voila. However, my radio is after market and to my eyes the DIN chassis it is sitting in pins in that plastic. Will upload a photo

Also, is any of this documented in the workshop manual? Have misplaced my printed copy. The HA section tells me a lot about the AC but nothing about control cables that I could see.

The walnut surround and the controls I'm trying to get to and a close up of the radio chassis I think is holding the black plastic facial in.

Yes after market radio, that last photo showing a close up of the left hand edge of the radio. Can you see the cut out towards the top, stick something flat like a thin piece of metal in there and it should release the radio from cage. Cage will probably be held in by the tabs being bent. The black panel where radio and hazard switch is on mine simply pulls out but needs a good tug . Haven’t noticed anything broken on mine so I assume all the same.
Screws that hold walnut trim, pull ashtray out and you’ll find two there. I’m sure there are another two possible revealed when radio panel removed. The walnut panel is also clipped in to the gear lever surround as well so you may need to lift that along the front edge.
Not a difficult job just take you time, only special tool I used was flat release keys that came with my stereo but these are easily available from halfords as an example.

Have a look at this thread and see post 29 &39 by Luke which are on page 2 & 3. Should give you a little idea of how it all fits. Post 29 shows a grey screw head next to the radio head unit Luke fitted. That might be the screws to remove as well.

Hi,

Can you link the thread? Or am I being dense and missed it in your post.

I should summon the courage to do this task, and check the duff bulbs behind the heater controls........it just seems so much of a faff.....:doh

So faced with option of plastic Sony radio removal tools from Halfords for £5 of a full set of tools in steel from Amazon for £8 I'm now the proud owner of these.

Anyway, radio is out and I know now I could have done it with some home made tools cut out of a milk bottle.

Shocked to discover the walnut trim is plastic :) It's out now as is all the radio gubbins.

Looks like the source of one of my problems. Just have to hope nothing is jammed the other end to have caused this.

I need to remove the beige plastic from the center console which is stopping the removal of the heater controls. I've found the two screws in the driver's footwell but can anyone tell me how the top of it is fixed to the beige plastic under the steering wheel. I'm sure I can break it apart but I doubt it would go back together. Presumably there are some other fixings or a correct technique to separate them.

I've had the interior out of mine but I can't remember where the fixings were. I'd guess you will have to remove the panel under the steering wheel first

Yep. Got a bit braver and found it's clipped in on the left.

Found problem number one. The plastic around the clip holding the cable sheath is broken. Will have to see what superglue can do.
