yep well and truly in it again, the motor has not turned a wheel since my last outing, think it was around August, and standing does not do a motor a lot of good, guess I must have ruptured a CV boot off side as it was not long before nasty noises emanated OSF was not driving any more, then a little later a clunk and NSF the same, so it seems I am blighted by front shaft failure, and I was being very sedate today, oh well it was still a good day, hope to do at least one more before Xmas, Rick

With a disco you'll just snap half shafts instead:augie

Nah mate, not unless you drive like a nob with 35" tyres. I offroad with mainly landies, they are easy to fix and cheap.

I've broke 2 cvs now on 31" tyres ...

have to say I have had better, new winch bitch was not a patch on my old regular girl, bit droll to say the least, and my own fault on the motor as been far to busy to carry out proper maintenance, but build project nearing completion, so will have more time soon, says me ho ho, some hope, Rick

They have to be,with a rust magnet chassis and the bad rep for reliability :nenau Don't get me wrong, I thought about getting a Disco as a replacement for the Shogun but after reading up on them and checking out opinions etc I decided against it as I wanted to spend my weekends adding mods not doing running repairs as well.

If you want live axles go for a Trol bud :thumbs (I may be a little biased...)

Disco with all the bits on £750

Half decent Troll with no bits £3000

;)

I know quite a few who have done it running smaller than 35" tyres. I sold my last Terrano for a V8 Disco 2 & what a huge mistake that was I spent more money & time fixing the disco in 2 months than I did on the Terrano in 3 years & I drove the Terrano hard on/off road plus the Terrano was far better off road. Would I have another Disco 2 ? no chance you couldn't pay me enough:lol hence why I spent 18 months looking for another T2:thumbs TBH the only good thing was the sound of the V8 when you opened it up but 4mpg hurt the pocket alot:doh

My T2 was on 33s for ages and driven like I stole it at all times , even more so off road. Never had a CV problem. Now on 35s ( not driven for a while mind) but I do have Calmini top arms and limited my lift to 2"
TROL is the way forward though, bloody awesome strength all round :naughty

stinka WTF are you waffling on about.
DIsco 750 quid.yuuup buy one and kill it on pay and plays on a trailer.
or use the 750 quid on an upgrade on the truck you told me not so long ago that you loved:nenau.
no brainer.
its rust free good motor. spend the cash on front axle:D

have to say, I like my T2 and it is only since I upgraded with the MAF amp that I have done so many shafts, but maybe that is just coincidence, and of course used shafts are what they are, no idea what they have done in the past, Rick

Trol

yes Pete maybe a trol is a better upgrade, will think on it, what is the wheel base? Rick

I do love it mate, but it has it's limitations due to the IFS, I'm still tweaking the setup so not done yet

I'd love to sas it tho

Trol SWB wheelbase is 2.4m or in old money, especially converted just for you Rick, 94.5 incheres ? :lol
So only a tad more than a Landie 90 :sly but it's track is a little wider and so in my world considerable more stable laterally :thumbs Also has a lower roof profile . So even a lifted one will scratch the roof a little less

Problem with the terrano is the diff is on the passenger side, Not many decent and easily available axles in the UK have this config.

The cherokee front axles would be a good swap (front diff on the left, rear is center) but I read they are pretty weak. I guess it depends on how hard you wheel them. :nenau

I've drooled over SAS for ages but now conclude it's not worth it. Just buy a lokka for the front.
You don't get a lot more articulation really for all the work and it's a very lengthy conversion = expensive.
I'd rather spend the money on finding a Trol for example, as it's so strong in every respect straight out the box.
The T2 IFS can be made to flex a lot more than std by rose jointing all the bushes. That and a lokka and good back end flex will make a very very good T2 offroader :thumbs

Jeep xj Dana 30 is fine upto 35"s or more with cromo axles, closest ratios are 4.1 or 4.5 tho (most Terrano are 4.375)

Dana44 is bulletproof but none in uk

Best option is h233b patrol front, either drill out plug welds and swap tubes and shafts from one side to other to achieve left side drop, or patrol transfer box may fit or swap whole gear box with a bell housing conversion

Early Toyota hilux axle is also a good option and the 4.3 ratio is available, but try finding one ;)
