Help please boys n girls
I've been wanting some onboard memory map action but don't want any more gizzmos to stick on the dash
So can I use the touch screen DVD head unit I've got (Ripspeed ) and plug in the laptop to it?
Then I can flip the screen up and gps to the lappy and see memory maps on screen :D
I'm computer dyslexic by the way :doh
So answers in small words please :D

depends what connections you have on the back of the laptop, you should be able to use the dvd screen as an external monitor to the latop if that makes sence, laptops usually have a plug on back to plug a monitor into should the screen get broke for recovery purposes

some of the double din 7" all singing dancing heads have a form
of windows, perhaps version ce, rather like some smart phones.

the heads come with some generic sat nag software, but say can
add tomtom, suspect the tom tom version is a windows version
as would find on a pda.

ok if does then windows pda's can run MM....

Posted on the WRONG forum me think's :augie :lol

Its highly unlikely that the touch screen facility will work and link back as an input to the laptop.

As said already whether or not you can get a display from the laptop to the head unit depends on the input connectors on the ripspeed and the output on the laptop 100% . Then once you know what connections each have , a trip to maplins or similar to peruse the connectors and leads aisle.......................then home to get the same off flea bay :D

I suspect if you have a aux video input on the ripspeed and something like an s video output on the laptop your dream (this one anyway) may come true. Not sure what the resolution of the final display will be but for the cost of a lead its worth a shot.

Time to open the units instruction book up :thumb2

For the easy life, this what to lok for on the back of your laptop:

and this is a lead to fit into that at one end and the connectors on the other or them into a further adapter should be able to fit any aux input on the ripspeed

the monitor I used for my reverse camera system would have used a lead like this to do what your after :thumb2

If this is the solution be VERY careful plugging the s vid connector in, theyre bastards for easy pin bending.

that looks like s-video, judging by the components

this would be a one way trip ie screen data from lappy
to head screen.

if read you have a touch screen on head unit then just
like touch screen monitors it would need some way
of sending the touches, in lieu of a mouse/keyboard
to get back to the lappy.

touch screens at work have a vga for input from base
unit and a usb connection to feed back the touches.

really cant see a head having this, so really would need
a mouse and keyboard connected to lappy.

might as well just use lappy in this set up, or head to a
smaller netbook. ian douglas has a full size lappy in his
dicso on the centre console thanks to a mount he sourced.

to use head need to look at self contained, as suggested
one with an operating system that can run the mapping
program.

svideo to the "head unit" ie small lcd screen i installed for reverse camera worked just dandy :thumb2

As far as Im aware its the touch screen element that would be problematic. Im not aware of any external interface (at a sensible price) that would link a vehicle head unit to a non oem unit. Most that need that have it configured at the design stage eg my jeeps unit or the one in my mates jag :thumb2

Happy to be wrong as it means the potential for fiddling will increase :sly
