Hi all, could anybody point me in the right direction where to find the immobiliser dongle on 56 plate Nissan terrano? I've got immobiliser problems (solid light on dash but turns over and radio displays "wait" then disabled) so I bought replacement ecu/keys/ignition barrel off a known working car and also this dongle which I'm really struggling to find on mine! Any pointers would be much appreciated. Cheers...

When you say "Dongle", is this the tiny little chip that goes inside the Key? When you open the key up, tucked very tightly in a space tight down by where the actual metal key part enters the plastic, there is a chip that with a Jewellers Screwdriver, you can pop out.

Or are you talking about the control box that goes behind the centre of the dash?

As L F says, but you cannot just change things around without programming to the ECU, Rick

If on the other hand you mean a remote key fob then it will need programming to make it work, look in the downloads for the info you need, Rick

I’m wondering if you’ve changed too many items. I don’t recognise the unit you posted a photo of.
What exactly was your original problem?

I’m wondering if it’s something we’ve come across before on here so that you can refit your original parts.

Fingers crossed together we’ll get this sorted out.

Ok so original problem is car turns over but doesn't start. Solid red light on dash (car outline with picture of key inside) once the ignition is turned. Also the radio displays "wait" then after a minute displays "disabled or locked" can't remember which at the minute. So I start trailing forums to find the answer and the general consensus seems to point to fishy immobiliser. Taking it to a Nissan dealer is an absolute no go for me as I'm not made of money so I've ordered ecu/key/ignition barrel off eBay and what came was these other parts. I'm thinking as I've got them to fit them all and try that - worst case scenario I can eliminate these items being faulty.

Everything else is located and swapped - just need to locate this single and give it a try! Still have all the old parts to swap back if it's not successful.

Right got you I understand now. I’m assuming this fault happened whilst you owned the truck and all was well until that point. Also assuming you only have one key or at least both keys were the same. Sorry for asking such basic questions.
As far as I’m aware there is a receiver for the transponder around the barrel covered by the steering cowls. Just wondering if that caused your initial problem.

I totally understand about trying to avoid dealers and their prices, there’s also an element of skill and lack of experience on these trucks too.

I agree with Jim, I think it is the key reader (chip) and will most likely be located somewhere near the ignition barrel or in close proximity to it so it can read the key when you start the truck, good luck :thumb2

OK what you are calling a dongle looks like the later version of the plip key reader, if so it should have a Mhz frequency written on it, but stop there as you cannot go changing any of these bits without re coding to the ECU, the key chip reader is a coil of wire in a black plastic housing fitted around the top of the ignition barrel, make sure this is not damaged and connected correctly, it is on a two wire plug, prior to this event did you by chance try to start the car with a bad key, because if so three attempts and the ECU will block all future starts until the key is re programmed to the ECU, you do not have to go to Nissan for this, any good mobile locksmith can do it, had my off road motor done a couple of years ago cost around £60 I think, Rick

Are the parts from e-bay new if used were they all off the same vehicle ?
If not new items they might not be any better than the ones you have taken off.
As has been said the key will need coding to any replacement ECU.

Well it looks like the general opinion is the key chip...wish I had looked at that first before tearing off down this replacing all the parts route. Will probably have to wait till next month now to get a new one programmed

Had the truck 3 years and it's only ever had one key so I don't have another to try and I haven't tried to start it with a bad key unless my one and only key turned bad. The way it happened was it wouldn't start one morning - left it that day and it started later on, then didn't start the next time and hasn't started since, never had any problems before that first time - had plenty of other non electrical problems over the years though, it's been a terrible truck but can't afford to replace it just now. It's a back up work truck, daily driver is a defender.

Anyway I'll stop waffling and I'll report back when I get another key sorted. Thanks for the input chaps

When you say it does not start, does it turn over? Ignore that just read the top post :(

A trick that has worked for me on several terranos i have had starting issues with is to spay a bit of easy start not too much or you can lock engine then you will have wait for it to evaporate in to the air intake then when it starts run it for 5 to 10 mins i never had any issues after that worth a try i read about it 5 yrs on internet some where they say it resets the ecu etc not sure what it does do but has got me going again worth a try:thumb2
