Hi, I just thought I'd share my switch changing experience as it might be useful for others and the archives.
The car would start only if you turned the key slowly; if you turned it fast you just heard a clunk.
I thought that it was part of the nats security system taking time to register the key, as it’s been like it since I bought the car. However over the last couple of weeks the ignition went completely dead a couple of times and would then work as above. I searched this site and found that it is a common fault, so I ordered a new switch from Nissan for 37 pounds part no 48750-70j00.
You have to remove the steering column cover, 4 self tapers underneath. 3 of them are in recessed holes and one of them is by the lever that moves the column. The cover still would not come apart so I gently prised with a flat bladed screwdriver and it was off.
The switch is at the end of the barrel engine end. It is held on by one screw, its awkward as there’s not much room between the head of the screw and the dash, I used a screwdriver bit with a 1/4 drive ratchet and socket. Once that’s off it just pulls out from the barrel and you can pull the switch away from the cable socket, I nearly used a screwdriver to lever the cable socket from the switch I then realised that this might blow a fuse so I gave it a tug and it separated.
That’s it, reassemble in reverse order. The hardest part was getting the cover off as you have lie down and look up if you don’t know where the screws are.
Good Luck.
