Hi
It is still useable but, the ignition lock is a bit iffy!!!, The key can fall out when driving and we have to wriggle it sometimes to get things to work!!!----- what sort of a job is it to change it???
SORRY- I forgot to say it is a Terrano 1!!!
Also I can run it on any key, they all seem to fit ok!!!!

OK sounds like you have a well worn barrel, I am not too familiar with the T1 does it have NATS anti theft, if so then only use the original key, there will be others on that know more about your motor, Rick

I can tell you that it should be held in place by two shear bolts, the bolts get to a certain point when tightening and shear off to prevent anyone removing. I would have expected if there’s a transponder receiver antenna sensor it would of been a separate item to lock barrel though.

Shear Bolts

When we had our Carlon Stolen a few years back the column had been scaffolded.
I manged to remove the shear bolts with a sharp chisel with the help of a lump hammer. I used ordinary bolts when I fitted a new lock etc.

I undid the bottom of the column so I could rotate it and get the hammer at it without damaging the dashboard.

Thanks for the replies
I will take a look at it----would the lock be specific to this model ?
I am not aware of any immobilizer or alarm on the vehicle.

Take a photo of the plastic handle of your key and post it on here, we might be able to tell if it’s one of the types with the chip.
Also a bit of work but could you remove the lock and take a photo of it, someone might be able to compare with a newer terrano. Personally I would think nissan used same lock on several models rather than making lots of different types.
Incidentally if it’s like the t2 then the actual switch is a separate item held on to bottom of the lock with a single screw.

Thanks for that information
I know there is not a chip in the key as the car will run with anything that will go in the lock!!
Maybe the screw that holds the switch on is lose????, Bit too hot to look at it at the moment, we are thinking of going into the local cafe for some rest and coffee!!!!!!!
