ohh...Ray, you are a genius mate, im going to try cleaning my Tb actuator jobbie, I havent done that yet, i might also completely blank off the egr-only done it at one side i think so far.
ssorry, i should have started my own post :doh, im just having what i think are similar issues.

With better visibility it'll be a good time to check all the hoses etc. around the area too, don't forget to check the small vac. hoses too.
Tip: stuff some rag in the empty holes,.. or sods law says some small part will drop where you least want it.

right will do Ray. I have had the I/C off a few times before, but never knew about the Tb actuator, so im looking forward to cleaning that to see if it makes a difference, i really hope so!

The insides of the TB body will most likely be caked with oil & black crud from the EGR too.

probably, i cleaned a load out of my I/C, but because im not mechaniclly minded I didnt know about the TB actuator (unless I have looked at it but not realised what it was lol)

for my EGR, all I have done is blank off the pipe nearest the air filter, but if i remove the I/C im going to blank off the pipe onto the EGR the same, is that correct? or do i have to take the egr apart in some way?

actually, looking at your image, thats exactly how mine is, and i have fiddled with the throttle before, but i dont think i cleaned it or anything, ill need to follow instruction i think as i remember being worried i might break it...

Probably doesn't make a lot of difference, but it may be better to blank it at the point of maximum "suck"! Just remember below 2K RPM any air that get sucked in after the MAF will upset the ECU calc's.

I'm assuming, as a huddled mass, that this oil gunge-up is more likely to occur on a motor thats not used much, as opposed to one thats doing 20-30k thrashed miles a year?

I don't really know, but I'd say lots of wide open throttle etc.. (thrashing it) would probably exacerbate the build up. More EGR activity, more oil vapour, increased pressures yadayada....

<groan> spose I'd better get me solvent out......:(

Tick Over

Who'd of thought a simple question could start a frenzied post bonanza. My Mav is indeed a TDI (facelift model) and everyday I love it a little more. My first 4x4 and I think a good choice! Prevous owner has let it go a bit but I'm slowly overcoming all the niggles. Some good advice given will keep you informed as to my progress. Thanks Sean
